North Texas Irish Festival March 1-2

Apologies in advance if this is a redundant post. A quick search didn’t bring up much, so wanted to put a plug in for what is truly a great weekend of music and Irish cultural events. The North Texas Irish Festival is the largest Celtic Festival in the Southwest. This event is produced by the Southwest Celtic Music Association. The 2003 Festival will include live entertainment on seven stages, music and dance exhibitions, workshops, craft demonstrations, wandering musicians, the Urchin Street children’s area, traditional Irish food and drink, cultural displays, etc. Headline performers include Patrick Ball, The Blarney Brothers, bohola, Danny Doyle, Danu, Glengarry Bhoys, Lunasa, Ed Miller and Cathie Ryan. http://ntif.org

Should be a great time. If you make it there and see a slim balding guy, about 6’3’', with a big mustache, wearing ostrich boots, a big silver rodeo belt buckle, and sipping a Guiness, say hello. I answer to Robert or just Tex. My son Matt will have a backpack full of whistles for the off chance we hook up with any C&Fers

Hope to see you there.

I’ll be there, but I don’t have any good descriptions of me. There’s a picture of me in the “John N’s CD release party”…I cut the hair, though…It was getting too nasty  Hopefully we’ll meet up!

Brent

Hi Tex.

I’ll do a couple of stints pumping beer. I’ve got 100% white hair and goatee. I’ll probably wear my Union Jack boots, just to stir up some trouble. Maybe see you there.

Tom.

Tom,

Hope to meet up with you. Here’s the deal..if I make a positive identifcation of you first, you owe me a pint. Same goes for vice versa. Odds are in your favor, there’s fewer pairs of ostrich boots out there than white haired goat chinned Irishmen.

What about that cute woman from Tulsa, Kim, is she coming?

Cheers,
Tex

Hi Big,
When I say “white” I mean snowey white. If the weather cooperates I’ll be in a green kilt.

As for the beer deal…you’re on, buddy.

Kim is cute, eh? But I gotta warn you, she plays a Susato.

Tom.

Since it looks like the ice storms are about over, this deserves a bump.

We’ll be there as long as DFW stays open. I’ll be the slightly portly, but nonetheless endearingly dapper middle-aged gentleman in the gray skipper’s cap with the missus and two absolutely adorable 9-year-old identical twin boys in tow.

Sorry to miss out this year…too many irons in the fire. Have a great time…the weather HAS to be better than last year! GM

Hey…Didn’t see anybody from C&F that I know of…There was a good session on Friday night (a bunch of fiddles, about 3 flutes, a couple bodhrans, a zuke, and a couple guitars). The session on Saturday night was kind of disappointing, though…There was a special session that only certain people could get in to (the passes were like gold…). The public session wasn’t all that bad, though. Later, some of the people from the “special” session went to the lobby and started playing…That turned out to be pretty good. Eventually, we all went back to the “special” session and there wasn’t a guy there checking for passes so I got to go in…Turns out that the reason he wasn’t at the door checking passes was because he was trying to kick the people out of the room (that guy made me mad…there was plenty of foul language passed to him from the crowd  Anyways…The performances were good…Lúnasa’s plane was late so their first set was cut really short (all of their performances were packed…hard to find seats). I only got to see about thirty minutes of Danú. They were pretty good…I bought their newest CD. Most of the other smaller bands I heard sounded great. Tons of shops with everything from flags and CD’s to guitars and Guiness merchandise. I recommend to anyone that’s in the area. Later!

P.S. I just realized that I used good WAAAAAAY too many times.

one of my sons was there. he said that, unfortunately, lunasa had to contend with some bad mike setups by the electricians for a major part of the first set–especially affected the U pipes. he also said sean smyth is an awesome whistler.

Tinuviel…Does your son by any chance play a Copeland Low D and a Lehart flute?

Brent

actually, no. he plays a water weasel and a susato low G but, sadly, only has a C concert flute. i’ve been trying to talk him into investing in a real irish flute, since he does a lot of session playing at school in dallas, in addition to the chamber orchestra. he’s been afraid to spend the money, thinking that his hands might not be big enough, but at the festival he tried out a sweetheart rosewood flute and found it really comfortable to play. he’s also quite a talented bones and bodhran player (proud dad  ). at home we used to do a lot of fiddle and other combos together, but i’m pretty much limited to whistle now, due to rotator cuff tendonitis (arrgh!!).
