I have made an experimental batch of rosewood and brass telescopic whistles. I don’t have an official name for them yet- I was trying to think of something higher-class than Stowaway, that still had a nautical flavour. If you have an idea, please let me know.
Nice lookin’ whistles Cap’n.
If the telescopic tubes lock in place then they certainly provoke some thought. How much does a taper like that affect the tuning between the octaves?
Erle- The section don’t lock. The top one slides for tuning. The bottom joint has the fourth hole drilled through to allow for accurate positioning. I can also make it with a C body or a set of two. There is not much of a taper- only about 1.5 mm. A Shaw D has about 7 mm of taper. I’m happy with the tuning. Thanks for your comments and questions.
FD- Thanks for the suggested list of nautical terms. Two that caught my eye were Traveller and Privateer.
They’re available now for the introductory price of C$150, plus $10 shipping. Thanks for the name suggestions. I’m leaning towards either Privateer or Killick.
Howabout Alacrity? Name of the ship that Midshipman Allan Lawrie finally becomes captain of in the finale of the nautical fiction books by Dewey Lambdin? Means speed, or something like that. Looks like a quick whistle to me!
what a beautiful whistle! do you think you will offer them with the extra brass ring as well (like on your new rovers)?
i’ll throw in “windfall.” i found this online on a site that listed naval terms:
Windfall In the days of King George III, a common decree was that any tree greater than 24" in diameter ‘belonged to the king’. In other words, reserved exclusively for building materials for ships of the Royal Navy. It was forbidden to cut them down by commoners. However, if a big tree was felled by natural causes, such as a windstorm, then it was free and available for use by anyone. Thus a ‘windfall’ became applied to any unexpected stroke of fortune.
With my wife’s input, I have narrowed down the name choices to Traveller and Castaway, with Castaway slightly in the lead.
Eric- An early prototype had brass rings above the window and at the bottom of the wood (it was bocote). I decided to taper the bottom to give a better wood to brass transition, so I couldn’t put a ring at the bottom. Because there is no brass at the bottom, I had to leave the wood a little thicker, for strength, so the brass I have isn’t the right size for the top. Short answer: No, it won’t be available with brass rings on the mouthpiece.
thanks for replying (both the long and short answer i really like the rings on the new rovers, btw. but these new whistles still look great without, as well.
