Canadian Pipers

I’m curious to know where my fellow Canadian pipers are. I’m in Quebec city. I know of 2 others in Quebec city, 3 in Montreal, 1 in the Eastern Townships, one in Brockville.

What about the rest of you? Would you guys mind posting a reply indicating what city you are in or near?

Hi.

There’s a whole truck-load in Toronto (I mean, there’d have to be, to have the Chris Langan weekend, and because Chris Langan taught so many of them…

My pipe teacher is in Elora, and there are several down in Stratford, Woodstock, London and um.. surrounding area I guess (well, there is at least five… or six…)

Not sure about Windsor, but there’s Upipers in Forest, Woodstock, Stratford, London, Toronto, Kingston, Brockville, Peterborough, I think in Ottawa, and that’s just for Ontario. There was a wannabe in Winnipeg, there’s someone in Calgary, not sure about Edmonton, and then there’s a small group spread around BC on the mainland and Vancouver Island, as well as on some of the smaller Gulf islands.

There’s at least one hiding out in Rochester, NY. I think he’s originally from Winnipeg, soon moving to Nova Scotia.

Yes, I imagine Neil O’Grady must have started a few people off down east, but I haven’t heard from any of them here.

Montreal…greatest city in the province no pun intended PJ

BTW…I met a fellow here or at least 2 more who had pipes. One guy is very well known ( Alan Jones, and the other is Dave Gallant north of MTL but both have been AWAL since I last remember seeing them at Brockville,ON last year.

NPU can give you a list of all if its members in Canada.

Jordan McConnell is from Winnipeg though I don’t think he spends much time there. Here’s his Sean Bui which he posted on Clips.

Iain MacDonald, a GHBpiper in Saskatchewan, plays the UPs too.

GHB to UP conversion is not unusual but probably the oddest I’ve heard of is Jeremy Keddy who went from pipe band drumming to UPs. He’s in Ottawa I think.

Cheers,
Aaron

I can think of about a dozen on Vancouver Island. There’s a couple of folks who basically just have sets in their closets, a couple of us who play out regularly, and a bunch in between. When i moved to Victoria (from Montreal, in 1996), i was pretty much the only player in town.

I’ll let Greg speak for the BC mainland.

There’s also a site for the BC Uilleann Pipers’ Society.

Be seeing you.

I’ve run into two Uilleann pipers in Ottawa, you’ll excuse me for saying that, but GHB players kinda dominate in Ontario, we barely even have smallpipe players in any kind of real number.

There are about 50 names on the mailing list for the BC Uilleann Pipers’ Society. About half that number actually have pipes.

Greg

I live in Tweed and Belleville Ontario. I am pretty much a beginner. There is Ian Leslie in Kingston who I get together with now and then to learn. He is pretty good on them, so I am lucky that he is only a short hour drive away.
There is another guy in Kingston who bought a Joe Kennedy apple set, but never met him yet.

In terms of pipers clubs, there are the following:

BC Uilleann Pipers
Irish Pipers Club of Quebec

There has to be more. What about Toronto? Is there a club for Toronto, or perhaps Ontario?

Any other clubs out there?

Yeah, there’s a “club” in Toronto:

The Langan-Gorman (or maybe Gorman-Langan… or something) branch of Ceoltas Ceoltori Eireann (and I know I spelt the last wrong… oh heck just call it CCE)
Visit http://www.chrislangan.ca for the annual “club” meeting.

I see that uilleann.ca has been taken but it doesn’t seem to be a club or a pipemaker that is using the address. Anyone have information about this?

That’s Paul Reid.

The Photographer for all the photographs on the chrislangan site.

He also (sometimes) checks this board. And is a beginning piper (much like myself).

I know of a few pipers in Kingston and Ottawa. (3-4 apiece I think, but I could be mistaken). However, some of those guys tend to fly below the radar and might not even be part of NPU.
Toronto is teeming with players last I checked.

Also, I’ll be in upstate NY finishing my teacher’s certification next year and my Parents have a place up in Prescott so I’m sure I’ll be piping around the Kingston/Ottawa area looking for fellow musicians.

Cheers

Waddaya mean: ALL photographs ?

Hi Everyone!

I’m an Uilleann Piper in Waverley, NS. I am also stepping into the cold waters of making Uilleann Pipes (got a lathe, got a gun drill, etc.). I’d be interested to hear from other UPipers on the right coast of this great country. Drop me a line.

Regards,

Carl

Do you mean Tim Horton? (Sorry DJ, it was begging for a comment)
