uilleann pipe player near montreal??

i’m am simply searching for a uilleann pipe player near montreal, to play with, to exchange some tip, tune and if it’s possible, to learn how to built my own read!!

Alan Jones collects and plays many kinds of bagpipes, including the uilleann pipes. He lives in Montreal. No e-mail that I know of but you should be able to find him in the phone book. There was a fellow here in town named Toby Kinsella who plays pipes, but I believe he has moved back to Ireland.

There are a number of pipers in the Toronto area, including Debbie Quigley who’s really brilliant, and it would be worth going all the way to Toronto for a lesson or two from her.

There’s an excellent young piper named Anthony Santoro who’s in Burlington, Vermont – that’s closer than Toronto. In addition to technique he could probably help with reeds.

Don’t forget Ben Kohler and David Quinn in the Montpelier VT area. Their time is kind of limited because of their pipemaking business, but a few hours with Benedict could give you several months’ worth of material to study and practice.

Pipemaniac,

I will be heading to Montreal in two weeks to visit my in-laws and could use any excuse to get out of the house. Wouldn’t mind getting together for a session. I have been studying with Deborah for about 10 months now, and would gladly share all she has given me with you. Careful though, one session with her and I have enough material to work on for three months so I gradually see her less and less. Off to Dora Keoh’s to see if I can catch a pint with her tonight.

Send me a private message and I will give you my contact information.

Cheers,

Virgil

Hi,

I can’t admit to being a ‘piper’. but I am trying to learn. I am in the Montreal area and I have been playing an O’Grady set since receiving it last September. Since Montreal seems to be an Uilleann black-hole, I’ve been using Heather Clarke’s book and the Mad for Trad CDROM.

Jamie

if you are inerested Jamie, we can jam together one day. i live in joliette, that’s 40 minutes from montreal. I play since september too and i just receive my new neil o grady chanter so we could talk also about reeds and ajustement!!

I will be in Montreal for a Stag on the first weekend of August, and could meet at Hurley’s on the Saturday afternoon for some piping lessons. I have about 1 year’s worth of ornaments and techniques to learn that were given to me by Deborah Quigley; would be more than happy to teach them to anyone (note that I am not fast and clean on them yet).

Cheers,

Virgil

That’s a good idea. However, most ‘Celtophiles’ in the area will be at the Maxville (Ontario) Highland Games on Saturday, and our very own Montreal Highland Games on Sunday. In fact, Hurley’s runs the beer tent at the games in Montreal.

That sounds like a worthwhile plan to pursue sometime soon. I’m a bit lost when it comes to reeds, though. I bought 4 from Neil and have only played one. I haven’t had the cojones to dick with it, though…

I’m in Nova Scotia and get to Montreal a few times each year. Amateur maker/player here.

Vcolby, i will not be able to meet you that week end sorry. but you’r right, the hurleys could be a good place to play.

Pipemaniac, could you please check your Private Messages, please?

Thanks,

Jamie

Hi PM. Well, I am not far from Montréal.

Es-tu en communication avec bien d’autres pipers de la région ? Aurais-tu un prof à me suggérer ?

Martin
