What The Hell Is This?

Ummm…

Great-Uilleann-War-Pipes??

B~

(do I get the cookie?)

These are Micheal Dow’s Low D scottish smallpipes. Some discussion of them showed up on Bob Dunsire’s Bagpipe Forum a while back.

…?.. cool…

LONG bores on those drones…ouch

Smallpipes, interesting, kinda large aren’t they?

Jeff

Yeah, they’re large! Her’s a link to the original discussion. I hope it displays correctly.

These ones are named smallpipes because they make the person playing them look small.

You know…what happened was I ran across this web site while surfing yesterday, pasted it onto the board, and accidently closed the window…I forgot even what my subject was. And I didn’t even look at the URL on the photo…so I really didn’t know they were smallpipes. And I even forgot to look in “history” on my computer! I do remember the maker saying He was 6’2" tall, or something, and that the dones were 54" long.

Here’s the web site (using the picture properties to find the address)

Yeah, those are Michael Dow’s low D smallpipes. Pretty cool, huh?

Basically, it’s a cylindrical chanter fingered like a highland pipe with nine notes, and a couple of drones.

Nifty.

Stuart

Very disturbing! I bet they sound graet though!

PD.

I’ll bet those drones sound WAY cool.

i showed these to my wife and she said they were “outrageous”. they wouid be fun to play on a sailboat, with those drones sticking out of the top hatch.

My thoughts:
a) He must have a big case or roof rack.
b) How does he mic it for the concerts?
c) He gets paid not to play gigs.
d) Does he fall off the back of his chair often?
e) Must have a long lathe to have spun those.
f) He may be 6 foot 2 but could have an insecurity about something else (pipe #8).

Could go on all night.

Cheers,

V

g) They could double as fishing poles for when he goes sailing.

Seriously though, I would love to hear a sound clip of that. I’ll bet it is something.

Mike Dow has generously devoted a good deal of space on his website for a description and photos of this instrument. See <www.archcarving.com>. I’m the current owner and I think they’re great pipes, but not exactly what I need right now. The pipes are for sale. Contact me: stevenjobe@netscape.net or call me at 401-345-4320.

Those are just beautiful–I’d love to get my hands on them for a day. I heard Rory Campbell (Old Blind Dogs) on his set last year, gorgeous stuff. (pic here, see “biographies”: http://www.oldblinddogs.demon.co.uk)

P.S. Anyone aware of soundfiles for low D smallpipes online?
