So who plays some form of Bagpipes other than UPs? I play GHBs and am saving for Border Pipes, NSPs, and Galician Pipes (yes all at the same time) UPs are in my next group which will probably be Box, UPs, and a whole thing devoted towards Whistles. If you are womdering this is my new way of saving for instruments because I can never decide what is next so I have to save for three at the same time.
I would be interested to see some pictures of your Galician Pipes (maybe some sound samples as well). Iāve only heared these pipes and never seen them. Iād be interested.
At present I play the Uilleann Pipes, Great Highland Pipes and Scottish Smallpipes. All are lovely instruments and are usefull in different sittuations.

I second that.. me want pics, and sound clips if possible.. or why donāt you just give me them the pipes as a gift, after which I could do it (take pics etc) for you. Think about it, iām sure you too will see this is the most logical and natural course of action
Here Iāll post a few pics and tell you my specs
that is the bag cover and cords (above) that mine will have
that is the decoration (above) mine will have
that is the wood (above), my set will have a third drone one fifth below the base note of the chanter an alto drone. For more picrues of Galician Pipes from this maker (Gonzalo Caride the maker that will be making my set) go to
http://es.geocities.com/zalocaride/ now for some info, these Pipes have a history dating back to the 1100s they are a close relative to the GHBs are loud but not as loud as the GHBs (but they are still pretty loud) and do not have as piercing a sound the most common key is C (major) 7 holes (starting with a B) and a thumb hole 1 and 1/2 octaves they over blow keyless, open ended chanter conicaly bored traditionally they are in Boxwood can have 1 to 3 drones which are Bass, Tenor, Alto, and Soprano always has a Bass drone but the rest is up to the player Bass Drone is over the Shoulder the others are across the chest nowadays they are pretty much all mouth blown it used to be a combination of bellows and mouth now it is all mouth. You can hear one of the best Pipers here http://www.greenlinnet.com/shopping/search_detail.cfm?ProductID=301 that is her first album and her second here http://www.greenlinnet.com/shopping/search_detail.cfm?productID=1035 if you have any more questions just ask.
Beautiful looking Galician pipes there. Are those Seivane?
I play GHB, SSP, NSP, whistles and Lowland pipes.
They are Gonzalo Cairdesā I have heard many good things about his Pipes and he is the only Pipe maker who will respond to more than one or 2 emails so that is why I chose him. None of the Seivanesā responded to to my email but that is probably because they have sooooome much business they have no need to take more orders and are also too expensive for me any way.
There are mainly three types of Galician Pipes. The popular āGaita (de Fol)ā, with one bag and three drones (ronco, ronqueta and chillón) avaliable in three traditional tunings: āgaita redondaā (C), āgrileiraā (D) and ātumbalā (Bb); the āGaita de BarquĆnā our bellows-blown pipe, and the āGaita de Canaā, uncommonly used today.
The Gaiteiro (galician piper) de Guillarei (1905) with a Gaita de BarquĆn, :
The popular mestre gaiteiro O Rilo, born in 1829, with a Gaita de Fol galega
And Xavier Branco with our primitive Gaita de Cana:
Note that there are a lot of superb gaita makers in Galiza today, and folk and traditional bands too (I do not remember who affirmed that in Galiza there is a piper under each stone and you have only to give a kick so that leave one and begins to play )
For more information about galician pipes, take a look at this (in english)

I wish you a piping new year from Galiza! . Thank you all for this amazing forum

Recently Xavier Branco has released a record recovering an old galician bagpipe, the Gaita de Cana all made with cane Arundo donax and leather, with conical bore chanter, single reed and no drones. Itās a primitive shepherd bagpipe, played by pipers in the past and by traditional folk bands from XIX century too, only when there wasnāt enough resources or money to buy a boxwood big gaita. It seems thatās probably one of the older european bagpipes (documented as Corus Est Pellis Simplex Cum Duabus Cicutis in XI century), and represented in the Cantigas de Santa MarĆa (Songs in Praise of Saint Mary) manuscript (galician medieval miniatures, XII c,) in a developed and medieval style.

That is pretty cool.
Dear Unseen The ineffable collection of 30 different pipes can be seen at Oliver Seelerās site (but itās my collection!) and Iām getting another site going of my own that will have an additional 20 types that Iāve gotten since 1999, so are you up for true madness? seanthepiper.com
Make your own Gaita and other Spanish instruments - details at
http://www.es-aqui.com/payno/pral.htm
Some interesting photos of a variety of diferent instruments but unfortunately the measurements are not quite complete on some of them including the bore dimensions for the Gaita chanter

Edited for typos
I was born for all this madness. NOw if you have any Pipes that you donāt play a lot I would happily take them off your handsā¦
Sorry Unseen! I play my pipes all the time! Thank goodness I got alot of them BEFORE the prices went up (as the US dollar declined in value).
30 bagpipes (circa 1999) from my collection are deliniated at Oliver Seelerās web site āUniverse of Bagpipesā or www.hotpipes.com Oliver has a Czech dudy for sale by Pavel Cip (pronouned āSeepā) and perhaps some others, heās mostly flogging Scots GHBās from Dunbar, the Canadian maker. I have a short list of makers of different pipes if you let me know where your interests lie, lay, or leap! Jean,Jouer des Cornemuses (sean an piobaire)
On the topic of āother pipesā, it was mentioned in another thread about the Bagpipe Blowout in Bedford, UK, I understand Petko Stefanov a maker of fine Bulgarian Gaida will be there, if itās āyour bagā go check him out!
