HOLY SCHNIKEYS!!!!

What the hud is THAT thing?! LOL Obviously, i’ve spent too much time on the internet and not enough cleaning house or being a productive member of society today!

That is a Zampogna. Fairly common household object I would have thought.

Do you know anyone who plays/has one of these… Its Huge…

now I just KNOW he’s not compensating for anything there!

This had been a very common bagpipe type in Italy. But I guess it’s not really a “fashion” instrument anymore …
P.S.: Size doesn’t matter … it’s the technique. Isn’t it ?!?

I’m surprised you haven’t come across this before. This instrument was the basis for several lawsuits for copyright infringement in the early 20th century against the Hoover Vacuum Company.

There’s one.

Wow, I was surprised to see Ted Anderson when I clicked on that link. I have never seen him toting one of those around though.

They are normally alot smaller than this, and I think Andreas Rogge makes 'em.

Jack Devereux

Perhaps it’s not that the instrument is large but that the wee little man is small? Or perhaps this is the famous set of pipes from the “tick” family…they give out one POP so you have to have a great set of timing.

Great pic Brian!

Inevitably, someone on this forum will start a thread about the high cost of Zampognas, and why doesn’t Yamaha make them.

:stuck_out_tongue:

These have actually been outlawed in the UK since the 30’s. Seems that once you get them cranked up there’s a real danger of blowback if the flap on the inlet valve fails. It creates such suction that before you know it, the guy playing them gets turned inside out. Yuk, not a pretty sight, and nearly always fatal. And very messy.

They’re NOT big and they’re NOT clever!

Wow. Just wow.

Ya know, I think I remember seeing something on the Discovery channel about that very phenomenon - it was on one of their ‘Second’s From Disaster’ specials or something I think…

Here’s a sort of Willy Week with sun and pasta:

And here I thought it was a set of smallpipes being played by a hobbit. :smiling_imp:

It’s amazing how many varieties of bagpipe are out there - a coworker brought in his Bulgarian pipes a while back, but complained that he hadn’t been able to practice much since moving to the San Jose area.

Then he started playing a tune. Loud. Very loud. As in “play it out in the parking lot and people come running outside to complain”. The reason for the lack of practice was immediately apparent. Going by (scarred) memory, it was noticably louder than the GHB.

The last cut on the CD is pretty neat.

Excuse me, I believe I ordered the LARGE

I seem to recall seeing an old engraving in a book on scottish piping years ago that showed what appeared to be an entire goat turned inside out, with drones coming out two of the legs, a chanter out of one, and a blow pipe into the last. That’s about the only thing I can think of that might top this thing!

Never heard that Andreas would make something like this. They are neither in his catalogue. But maybe on special request. As add-on to your next uilleann pipe order.
