anyone’s greatgreat grand-dad?
it’s a pretty interesting set, what with 2 bass drones, by the look of it.

Note: the little girl with the practice set!

sorry if its been discussed already

Willie Rowesome, and the infamous Bb set.

well, I guess you NAILED that one

That is the set Glands purchased after it had been restored by Brad Angus a couple of years back. Glands later returned it to Kevin Rowesome and family. Great looking old set.

Better look at this lads

I saw the set at Lewis’ house at one point (pre-restoration), and I believe that Benedict and/or David Q performed the restoration.

Oh well, time to take my Geritol… again…

well at the very least we can comment on the incongruity of the palm tree, cathedral window, balustrade and rustic bench in the setting…

I could be wrong but, I don’t believe that set has two bass drones… I’m quite certain the u-bend on the Baritone drone was a style at one point.

Yes, it’s the baritone drone.

Willie Rowsome did this on a couple of sets (this one in Bflat, and Pat Mitchell’s C set). Later, Leo did a similar thing with a hollow puck on the baritone of two sets. Didn’t catch on - no acoustical advantage (apparently the opposite). Other than that, I don’t know of any makers who did this.

Bill

What do you think of this (coloured) photo (obviously taken on the bank of sweet Lough Erne  ) ? I can´t remember where I downloaded it from - all I saved was “Patrick Galvin”. The set appears to be another Willie Rowsome. Strikingly similiar but look e. g. at the base drone´s U-bend, the base-reg-cap or the chanter-top.

Also compare the design of the chair and the bench!

I put that up once. Paddy Galvin it is. The set is in a museum in NZ.

Great quote in the article from Ronnie (Wathen?) about regulators:

When people ask me what they are for, the regulators, I say that they are like big guns on a battleship, not to be used except in battle …

My favourite quote about playing chanter drones and regs together is “Attaching a tune with Horse, Foot and Artiliary”.

The set Paddy Gavin has in that picture is a different one to whats now in the museum in Arrowtown. I have a picture of it here somewhere. When I find it I’ll post it.

I’ve heard it said that the set Gavin has in the picture is the Bb Rowsome set. The set in the museum in Arrowtown is an Egan set.

Tommy

The set in the museum in Arrowtown is an Egan set.

That’s what I thought but I wasn’t sure. The 1982 article says Lorcan Dunne was on the track of the Rowsome but maybe we can assume by now the track went cold on him.

Not a great picture but…

I’m not sure if the Rowsome set ever got to New Zealand. The photo of Galvin could well have been taken in the US.

The Egan set was brought to Australia by John Coughlan along with another that ended up with Dan Dowd.
