That one has been up for months, they print one up from a scan. It’s John Wayland, by the way.
Thanks Peter,
I hadn’t seen it before. Do you know if there is another thread discussing this photo? I was curious about the size of the girl’s chanter, and also the size/shape of the bag on the teacher’s set. The former seems quite small, the latter quite large.
Found it interesting, in any case.

Waylands pipes are a B, they are (were?) held in some Australian university, I think Sydney. Geoff Wooff had them on loan for quite some time (in fact I think they forgot he had them at all and were quite surprised when he returned them), for measuring and examination. There is some confusion about the maker, O’Neill describes the set (and it’s player) but Geoff tells me he saw Wayland’s copy of O’Neill’s book with comments scribbled in it that indicated Wayland thought O’Neill didn’t get it right (at this moment I forgot which maker was the actual one and which one O’Neill said it was and I am not going to look it up now).
I seem to have a vague memory the set has gone walkabout, but not clear enough to say more.
Bb Egan. No name on them though. Willie R. bellows. Geoff copied the chanter for a good long while, but the semi-large bore gives a pitch between Bb and B, which people weren’t happy about, so he redesigned things - smaller bore and fingerholes. Brad Angus had to do the same. Dinney Delaney thought they were Kenna, Wayland wrote “Coyne” in his copy of IMM. I think O’Neill used the word “superannuated” to describe the set! He wrote of Wayland buying the pipes at any rate. Hard to know what you had back in them days.
Wayland is also pictured with what looks to be much the same set as Willie Rowsome is holding in the self-portrait. Brad spotted just a couple of minor differences - shapes of keys/blocks, and of course Wayland’s set doesn’t have the fourth regulator. Also in Bb.
EDIT: I see that the W Rowsome is the set in the eBay picture. Wayland is pictured with the Egan in IMM.
The pic of Wayland with the Egan set is here:
