Fred Rose flutes

Hi all, has anyone played one of Fred’s flutes? They seem very cheap.

They are pretty good flutes for the money, however they play a fair bit differently than most “Irish” flutes, in terms of embouchure.

IMO…Biggest Bang for the buck in the new Irish Flute market. Good tone and intonation at a very resaonable price!

I dont know about pretty good, I found mine to be a very good flute for the money. I dont recall having to do anything much different with my embouchure then I would for any other of my flutes. Don`t know what Fred charges now but he does good work.

If it’s of a quality similar to his whistles, then it’s a fantastic flute.

Very nice flute, mine has a tuning slide and is very easy to play (air volume and embouchure)

I’ve only been playing flute for a month, but for what it’s worth, I’m happy with my Rose. I’ve tried cheaper flutes (bamboo flutes from Erik the Flutemaker and other ren-faire makers) but none of them really was good enough to make me keep at it for more than a day or so. Now i’m playing the rose in session already.

I can’t really compare it to any other irish flute. I don’t have the experience. But I certainly do like mine.

Hmm, interesting. In all fairness, the Rose flute I had was made approximately 4 years ago, so perhaps he’s made some changes. As I recall, the other person who had one of these flutes around the same time as I did also mentioned their flute requiring something different embouchure wise. A search for Rose flutes should yield those earlier reviews, although perhaps they are of limited, or no value if one is considering a new Rose flute or one made very recently.

I have a Fred Rose flute. Its wonderful. At a session last year in Ireland that was a popular view from others who tried it. Minor problem - dry it really well after use and don’t leave the two bits connected - the joint gets too tight and I fear it could split the wood. Value for money - you bet, buy two!
