Ever made a dumb mistake?

This girl sure did. http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/news/042005_nw_missing_violin.html

:boggle: :boggle:

That’s not dumb,it’s criminally insane.
If I had the loan of such an instrument I would handcuff the case to my right wrist and keep a loaded gun in the other hand, then if somebody got the fiddle off me I could shoot myself.

Slan,
D.

It’s unclear from the article whether she had left the violin case visible on, say, the back seat, and it was an opportunist snatch, or if she had it locked in the boot out of sight, and someone knew she had it and targeted it.

Either way she was very stupid and careless to leave such a valuable instrument in such an insecure place, especially as it was uninsured and irreplaceable.

Yes, but she’s still very cute, and if I had a fiddle and bow worth $850k I’d consider loaning them to her

So would Amar.

It is probably in a pawn shop where the thief got $20 for the fiddle. Someone may have a real find one of these days.

Ron

Forget security - she was criminally stupid to leave an instrument like that in an unattended car where heat and humidity could ravage it. Shoot, you don’t leave a good acoustic guitar, worth maybe a couple of thousand, in a car if you have half a brain and any respect at all for the instrument!

Note also that the instrument was insured, just not for theft from a vehicle. The owner probably allowed that clause to save a considerable sum of money and because he felt secure in the knowledge that no one would ever leave a valuable wood instrument in an unattended vehicle!

Moral of the story - if you own an $850,000 instrument don’t lend it to a twenty year old blond.

Speaking of Dumb…
Some years ago back in Dublin,I put my fiddle case onto the roof of a car while I was helping a friend to get her wheelchair into the back of the vehicle.
She was driving and as we went off on our journey people were beeping horns and waving at us.
Now the funny thing is that the week before I had done some TV work with a well known Irish Folkie so She sez to me “I never knew you were so well known”
"Neither did I " sez I.
Shortly after there was a loud bang from behind and I turned around only to see the fiddle case bouncing along behind. She slammed on,I jumped out and managed to get to the fiddle before a huge double decker bus.
The fiddle was still in tune!!

The moral of this tale is that a good case is worth its weight in gold.

Slan,
D.

I can’t relate to this thread. I have never done anything dumb in my life

:stuck_out_tongue:

You’re young…plenty of time yet

Slan,
D.

I did read an article somewhere that said scientists are thinking that parts of the human may not finish developing until the late teens, maybe early twenties. These are the parts that affect judgement. It could explain why some quite young people take weird risks in cars, with alcohol, etc.
They may not have reached the age of reason yet.

I would have thought, though, that if she were accomplished enough to play a violin of this sort that she would know not to leave it out of sight anywhere and that a car is a poor place to store a sensitive instrument.

I’m glad I’m not in her shoes!

Shhhh…you’re ruining my moment!!!

Me too. Those heels are killers.

But you have to admit that they’re really CUTE! Ad would agree with me too…I really miss ad

You see her shoes?

Nah. It was an assumption on my part for the sake of weak humor.

Well, I think you should wear sturdy shoes when carrying an instrument like that!

i wonder who’s gonna buy such an instument anyway…
you couldn’t just walk into a session with it an and say"it used to be my grannies",
and after, someone might spill a pint over it!
or is there special sessions for rich gangsters

I wouldn’t want to be around a gangsters’ session when they started opening the fiddle cases. I’ve seen too many Jimmy Cagney movies to risk that.

things changed, uilleann pipers are the dangermen now

My husband did the fiddle-on-the-car-roof trick, too. He was supposed to be driving just behind me, and the friend in my car noticed that he had stopped on the freeway. “Oh no,” she said, “he must have car trouble!”

“No,” I replied. “He probably left our daughter’s fiddle on the car roof and it’s just fallen off.” Which turned out to be right. Too bad my intuition didn’t kick in earlier, before we all drove off. But the fiddle was okay.

This may be legend… but I heard a story that Pete Seeger once reported his banjo stolen, only to find he had done the same thing. It was found on the roadside just where he had been parked.

That poor violinist. Stupid, yes, but what a price to pay. :boggle:
