So, I was in this session last night. One that I’ve never been to before. And, as usual for me, I was people-watching.
It struck me that flute is one of the sexiest instruments for a woman to play. Almost any woman playing flute will look attractive to me. It also struck me that recorder is, for some reason, a complete turn-off, with whistle somewhere in between. I have no idea why this is.
Now, whilst not being all that interested in men (from one point of view), I can also tell that there are certain instruments that look good on men, too. Pipes is the obvious one, I reckon. And, I’m sorry, but, saying nothing about the instrument, mark you, but banjo for a man is, visually, just … creepy. (OK for a woman, though.)
Clearly, I’m now going to get barraged with hate mail from recorder playing banjoists. But, other than that, has anybody else thought like this? Or is it just me being weird? (Again )
I can’t play flutes. No embouchure that I can manage. I’ll cope with second-rate I guess. But, theoretically speaking, I’m going to propose that playing flute calls for a certain uprightness of posture that improves anyone’s appearance.
That is possible, isn’t it? I think particularly of Steph Geremia when you mention the upright posture. Mind you, she’d look good playing a half-eaten turnip ocarina in a sack.
Cello has a certain physicality, I suppose. But do men look good playing cello? See, I think, if it’s orchestral instruments, for men it has to be one end or other of the strings (ie violin or double bass) or trumpet. Trumpet’s good for men. To the women out there: am I right? But then, it still could depend on your taste, 'cos the trumpeters will be beer drinkers whereas the violinists will be wine buffs.
Check out Yo Yo ma. He pays attention to the instrument, he doesn’t have to drape himself over it like a double bass player does, looking like a sloppy drunk dancing with a short woman, but sits there and listens to his companion. The Violin always seems like a tool, like the bow is a saw trying to get through a piece of wood.

Weird, it’s the opposite for me concerning flute/whistle.
There was once a topic here featuring a lovely lady with
a bare midriff onstage playing flute, with a whistle stuck
into the waistband of her leafy skirt. I desperately wish
I could find it. It seems relevant to your interests.
The Fabulous Baker Boys was on TV recently. Two words: Oh my.
I think that sometimes a musical instrument helps to uncover a person’s soul a bit more. I’ve known a few people who were transformed when they were playing an instrument. Many years ago, I had a friend who had a doctorate in economics and was even nerdier than that but place him in front of a piano and he’d play ragtime like his life depended on it. Maybe it did.
The observation on recorders, flutes and whistles - I concur.
Fiddles! And Violas! Corrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Cellos have a lovely sound but I can think of one folksome player I know and without denigrating her in any way - she is an attractive woman - the cello does not enhance her admirable qualities. The harp doesn’t do it for me either.
Thinking here of a Folk context ( rather than a seisiun, particularly) the guitar enhances the appeal or otherwise of the player.
If they are a fairly attractive man or woman, and they pick up a guitar and can play the damn thing, then they become a very attractive man or woman. If they are a fairly unattractive man or woman and they pick up a guitar, unless they can play the thing like an angel or a superhero, they become a very unattractive man or woman.
=== pause for reflection on my own efforts === Nope, I am resigned to be very unattractive. Heigh ho.
