I’m planning to go with my husband to Austin late October early November. He’s got a geology conference, and I’ve got 3 days to knock around town. I saw there’s an Irish pub there; does anyone know anything about it? I doubt I’d be brave enough to play, but it sure would be great to listen!

Rosemary,
There’s actually a pretty decent session in Austin every Sunday night at a place called BD Riley’s. I live in Waco right now, so I dodge down there every so often - it ranges from mediocre and well suited to beginers to really smokin’ hot, which is what I prefer.
Anyway, if you’re around for that, I’d recommend it. The pub’s on 6th Street and Brazos in downtown, about ten minutes from the UT campus.
Regards,
Jamey.
Try this site for session information:
well, we’re only going to be there from Tuesday to Saturday. But I see from Stan’s website suggestion (thanks, Stan!) that there’s a Celtic Fest that weekend! Maybe I can persuade hubby to stay a day longer…
If you do make to ACF, there will be a hot band there called Cluan (www.cluan.com). They’re friends of mine and great players all, their fiddle player Chris being particularly amazing - make sure you get a chance to see one of their sets!
Regards,
Jamey.
I’ll heartily second the recommendation of Cluan. I just saw them last weekend at a little Celtic festival in Bedford, TX. They are all truly wonderful and the lead singer, Erin (what else?) Bobruk, (who is learning the whistle, BTW) makes Andrea Corr look and sound like Joan Rivers. Right now one of the fiddle players, Stephan Paetzoid, has a good go at the whistle from time to time. You can get a sample of their style on their website, but it doesn’t compare to live performance. What really amazed me was their bodhran (rhymes with "moron’ and often played by one) player, Chuck Wright. Never seen one played like that in all me born days. Brilliantly inventive.
They were the blazing bright spot in a weekend of otherwise predictable music. Also too much bluegrass/country/rock fusion and too many recorders for my admittedly stodgy taste.
