Whistling in Austin

Does anyone know where I can find Whistling happening in Austin, Texas?

I used the search under “session listings” at http://www.sessioneer.com and found a listing for a session at B.D. Riley’s Pub on 204 E. 6th St in Austin, meeting weekly on Sundays at 6pm.

Hope this helps and good luck!

The Ceolas](http://www.ceolas.org/pub/session.list%3ECeolas) Session List includes the following ofr Austin.

  • Draught Horse Pub. 4112 Medical Parkway, Austin. MONDAY nights, 8:30-? Hosted by Austin’s own “Crazy Jane & the Bishop.” Austin’s best session venue yet; Irish atmosphere in a brew pub w/ more than 30 beers on tap (free for musicians) Runs the gauntlet of the Celtic tradition: mostly Irish but also Scottish, Welsh, quite a bit of Breton, even Gallician, & sometimes Cajun(?!).Contact: Larry Rone (LRONE@HRW.COM) or (512) 443-5225
  • O’Bryan’s Pub & Grill. 619 Congress Ave. Austin. WEDNESDAY nights from 8:30-? New Irish pub with full menu and bar. Sessions just getting started, but looks like a good crowd most nights. Free beer for musicians. Several of Austin’s Celtic bands represented. Tune in later for updates. (512) 476-4764 or (rarii@io.com)
  • Senor O’Brien’s Restaurant. 624 W. 34th St. Austin, (512) 451-9555. Every SATURDAY night from 8:00-? Number & proficiency of musicians varies widely, but sometimes a really great session in which folks from all over show up.

Folk Roots Onling Guide (F.R.O.G.</a](http://ifp.uni-muenster.de/~tkeller/pub/usa2pub.htm#texas>F.R.O.G.</a)>) has the following listings:

  • Art’s Rib House, 2330 South Lamar Boulevard 78704, Austin, 442-8283
Tuesday nights - fiddler’s jam session.
  • Cap’n Tom’s BBQ, 11800 N. Lamar, Austin, 834-1858 Bluegrass jam on the second Saturday (sometime in the afternoon).
  • Colorado St. Cafe, 705 Colorado St., Austin Scottish-Irish jam on Mondays 7:30 pm. Everyone welcome.
  • Dog & Duck, 406 West 17th Street 78701, Austin, 479-0598 (near downtown) Friday evenings (early) - Bagpipe & drum practice.
  • Draught Horse Pub & Brewery, 4112 Medical Parkway, Austin Monday & Wednesday nights - Irish jam session. “Austin’s best session venue yet”. “Mostly Irish but also Scottish, Welsh, quite a bit of Breton, even Galician.” Very smokey bar, despite the “no smoking near the musicians” sign.
  • McGillicuddy’s, 619 Congress Ave, Austin
No regular session but this venue fills in when other venues are not available. Sometimes there are weekday sessions but none on a regular basis.

Hope this gives you some leads. Once you find a couple of sessions you like, make sure you ask the other folks at these sessions if there’s anything else going on. Often there are additional house and pub sessions sponsored by non-Web folks ;o)

Hope this helps you find some folks to play with and …

Enjoy Your Music,

Lee Marsh

For what it’s worth, my flute teacher has been encouraging me to start attending sessions in Austin, and the Sunday night B.D. Riley session is the one he currently frequents and says is the best in town.

Speaking of sessions in Texas, would any of you know of any sessions in the Dallas/Fort Worth area?

Imagine peace,
Sara

EXTREME JEALOUSY

Sara,
http://www.sessioneer.com under “Session listings” and “Search” for that area shows three or so sessions. I’m sure the above web addresses from the other posters on this thread would also give you more info.

Good luck

Wellll…how about going to hear The Chieftains in San Antonio on Thursday 1/31???
I’m sure gonna try! Gm
