Finally! I've sussed ornamentation!
Well, after playing for nearly a year now I think I finally understand ornamentation.
It's simple -- you just play a bunch of notes real fast, then choose the one you want to 'land' on.
Why don't any of the tutors tell you that?

Hehehe. You just gave me a view of Bloomfield 18 months ago.fatveg wrote: It's simple -- you just play a bunch of notes real fast, then choose the one you want to 'land' on.

Well, as I've said before, I sometimes think ornamentation came about because someone was playing away, landed on the wrong note, and managed to sound good while he was trying to find the right one! (yes, I know, I know, but I swear after God knows how many years, an awful lot of my cuts and taps would be better referred to as "Oops's" and "Uh ohs")fatveg wrote:Well, after playing for nearly a year now I think I finally understand ornamentation.

Ornamentation
yes but I seem to understand ornamentation but not how to play it fast enough to get back to the right note. After nearly 2 years I finaly got a G roll today.

Re: Ornamentation
Congrats! I remember when I got rolls, when the penny dropped. I'm not saying it was like, you know... doing it for the first time, but it was quite a feeling.selkie wrote:... After nearly 2 years I finaly got a G roll today.

In jazz the technical term for this as an approach to improvisation is 'Faking It'. It's a bit harder there, since the instruments are chromatic. You actually have to be careful which notes you include in the fast bunch.fatveg wrote:Well, after playing for nearly a year now I think I finally understand ornamentation.

I would have though that you manage this by sticking to the 'Reason d'Etre' of this board-i.e. Whistles and the playing of whistles, and not post so much fluff! Something we're all guilty of to a greater or lesser degree!Cranberry wrote:I don't understand how you can belong to this board for a year and have under 200 posts.

Congratulations. I'll attempt to apply that idea. There have been a couple times when I missed the "correct" note and quickly went to it and it sounded great. When I try the same thing on purpose it messes up.
I finally got a few great rolls down for Camaronian Reel (spelling?).
The reel trick is to be able to mentally "know" when to roll and when to tap etc. Which reminds me, I'm trying to figure out where to have rolls and such in St. Anne's Reel.

I'm no longer trying a new posting paradigm

Does anyone else find that there are certain notes that they almost always want to ornament in some way? I don't know if it's the music I play or just my fingers, but I often find myself either trilling or double gracing low A and F and high E. I also find I like a tap or short roll when moving between high A and B (or vice versa)...particularly when playing my shriller whistles. It's not something I think about, really...just something I tend to do.

You can attempt a short roll on pretty much any of the crotchets in the first half save the final one, but it would probably be over croutoning the soup to do them all. Long rolls can be attempted on dotted crotchets in the second half. Best thing is to hear the tune played and take your lead from that. Brother Steve's website gives some great advice on ornaments and rolls.geek4music wrote: I'm trying to figure out where to have rolls and such in St. Anne's Reel.
There's a great playing of this reel on "Bringing it all back Home", with three fiddles weaving in and out of the melody - always brings a smile to my Hale & Pace when I hear it!
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that schwing
