She gets PAID to make those sounds? It sounded like a cross between fingernails on a blackboard and a cat being skinned alive - with a touch of rap thrown in.
I’ve been a-wondering about your handle. Didymus means “two fold or twain” in biblical Greek. Is there a story there?
That is a very interesting sound. I really don’t think she knows how it was supposed to sound. At some instances, you can hear one tone descending, while another is ascending.
I was shown this little experiment by my flute teacher many years ago, and it goes like this. In a small room, have someone whistle a steady tone, while you start on the same pitch and then make the pitch go up. You will hear a third pitch going down, although there are only two of you in the room. You can also make the third note go the other way by reversing the procedure.

I’ll have to try that in my closet when I move out, hehe
Wow, that will probably give me nightmares tonight (I listened to the “large water flute” sample).
Yikes-a-hootie!
The book/disc set referenced – “Gravikords, Whirlies & Pyrophones”, Bart Hopkins, Ellipsis Arts – is highly recommended if you are interested in ‘unusual’ instruments. I love it – the ‘Daxaphone’ has to be heard to be believed. I often play it to people to see if they can work out how the sound is made.
After listening to the large sample and the howler flute, my daughter said “OOOhhhh! My stomach hurts!”. An appropriate response, I thought.
I just went back and listened to the didjeridu sample. It’s kinda cool…

“Music hath charms to soothe the savage beast”
Well…
My husband already thinks I’m having a midlife crisis or something since I started playing these whistles. If I showed up with one of these, I’m sure he’d think I’d had some sort of psychotic break!

Pretty ocarinas though…
Yeaoouch! I realize that some of those instruments are supposed to sound like animals, but must they sound like animals suffering some horribly slow, gruesome death?
