Ever Wonder What a Crystal Flute Sounds Like?

During my nightly trawling of the internet I found the following at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston website: http://www.mfa.org/
Under COLLECTIONS - MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS - HEAR THE SOUNDS OF THE COLLECTION..WIND INSTRUMENTS …

A French Crystal and Silver Flute by Claude Laurent ~ 1837

Note the Crystal Clear quality of the tone!

Honestly, Jordan, I simply must hand it to you, in that you do come up with some delightful flutes! This one is a beauty, and I’d love to have it!

I want one. Nine or ten keys please.

:frowning:

Superb!

Don’t drop it.

So, if you play it really high, really strong, and really focused, will it shatter?

Naw…

That’s what them little ridges are for.

They help dampen the sympathetic vibrations.

do not take 'im seriously

Nice one, Jordan - thanks for the clip link! I actually got to hold and have a blow on one of these years ago chez Paul Davis, but it had leaky keys and I wasn’t playing well either, so didn’t get a huge amount from the experience, unfortunately. Plus I was far more interested in the stunning ivory baroque flute he had at that time… with which I totally fell in love!

Hmm… I thought they were flutes, like on a gun barrel, to help keep it from overheating when you play really fast.

'at’s it…make 'im feel old :frowning:

pretty fast ta get glass ta melt, innit?

There’s an album (available on eMusic I think) where Jan Boland plays rare and unusual flutes such as these. Nice music, too.

Yes, this is what it sounds like …

CRASH!!! tinkle tinkle

They could have made them spiral, to give good directionality to the notes you play on it.

Laurent’s crystal flute sounds lovely, as played on this album: http://www.virginia.edu/topnews/releases2000/crystalflute-july-11-2000.html

Not sure where the album is available…I recall buying my copy at Monticello.

Lovely flute, lovely sound.

Very bright, sounds almost like a Boehm in the brightness of the sound.

They’re external, not internal rifling! Definitely heat-sinks, not aim and range improvers!

You are all just jealous! :stuck_out_tongue:

Every Sneetch on the beach knows that fluted flutes are the best to toot!

fluted flutes are for winers

That hurt more than an ice cream brain freeze. Have you been taking your medication?
