I got an email yesterday from somebody who has some sort of band, which has a St Patrick’s Day gig, looking for an uilleann piper to sit in with them for the gig.
They pasted a link to a recording which they said was the sound and style they were looking for.
It was Kathryn Tickell playing Northumbrian pipes!
I’ve had scores of people over the years tell me they want to hire somebody to play “the loud bagpipes you march around in a skirt” but paste a link to somebody playing uilleann pipes.
But to hire an uilleann piper to play the Northumbrian pipes is a new one!
I got invited to “march which the pipers” in the Montreal St. Patrick’s Day Parade. I said “Certainly, as long as you provide a wheelchair and someone to push it”.
A wheelchair would have come in handy for me as well.
I was just nearing the end of playing at memorial service. I had played UP at this funeral home before and all was going well. Then just before the final piece the funeral director announced that everyone in attendance would stand and follow the piper outside.
