Rudall Carte & Co. 4108 on the block G&H, March 18th

Rudalls getting dumped right, left & center these days

English rosewood flute by and stamped Rudall Carte & Co 23 Berners Street Oxford Street London, no. 4108, case
Estimate: 50-80

Unusually low estimate or is it a piccolo or just a sign of the times

Can’t be a simple system D flute with that address + serial no., most certainly some later system or a piccolo.

Well, the address and marque do not exclude it being simple system, though more likely on a Bohm tube than a conoid one if so… but that serial no. wouldn’t tally for a conoid 8-key. It could be a band flute or a non-Bohm system, but I think they’d mention that, ditto if it were a piccolo. The lack of extra descriptors suggest to me that it will be a Bohm concert flute and probably HP for such a low estimate.

extremely unlikely to be an 8key flute, most especially with the low reserve.

or it’s possible they’ve simply misread the serial number (they often do).

There’s a boxwood and ivory Clementi in there too

PS. wouldn’t pay much attention to their catalogue guide prices

yes, but the Clementi is not a Nicholson model. Keep that in mind.

Too…getting ivory into the USA is a chore. Not undoable, just a headache.

And Clementis are notorious for flat foot syndrome. My own has a new foot made by Mr. McGee.

Is this one:

looks better than the description.
non standard clementi’s model.

This is really a beautiful flute. I like boxwood.

Where did you get the image of the Clementi, Radcliff? No pictures on the GH online Catalogue as linked in the OP that I can see…

It does look to be a lovely flute and in good nick. I wonder what its sounding length/pitch is…

Ah, auction was yesterday - did you go? Did you buy it?

I just placed a bid and got the luck of the Irish!
In short time I’ll can tell you more about it!

is it looks like a rudall, isn’t it?

It does, indeed, look very Rudally. Good one - congrats!

Any Ideas about who made it??
I would say Prowse, as it is a Clementi Branded, but it doesn’t looks 100% prowse’s work.
it really looks to me as a rudall series 2000-3000! (my #3830 has very similar shape)

also, the clementi’s marks are the usual ones?

nice one, look forward to hearing about it. Are you coming to Ballyvourney at Easter?

congratulations! nice find. looks in great shape for an old boxwood flute.

typically houses will provide photos on request, often to those who have been frequent bidders in the past.
many have good photo facility, but others may just use a camera phone and the images are not as detailed.

this one is a good shot from GH. they must have upgraded their stuff.

typical clementi flute…appears to be Post-Prowse…in that the large finger holes, key touch structure, etc, were very much of the vogue after Prowse left to construct on his own.

verylikely to have been guild flute built to spec and stamped for clementi.

notice there is a missing ivory ring to RH piece. the socket. You should have that repaired asap, radcliffe.

this one might not be so bad in that it’s post-prowse, whose foot notes were woeeeeeefully flat…by more than 20cents. on the D.

look foward to hearing it.

I was in GH yesterday on another matter, I asked about the Rudall Carte and nobody seemed to know anything about it!
I did get a quick (a few seconds) look at the Clementi, the tuning slide was partly open showing that the wood covers the outer part of the outer part.

The results of the GH auction onthe 18th are online now. The OP RC&Co, whatever it was, got ÂŁ260 at hammer - well above estimate.

Interestingly, this evening this has appeared on eBay from our old friends magginisupplies - went for ÂŁ110 (hammer) at the auction! Ambitious as ever!

that’s not a flute anymore, there is just a series of cracks with wood all around… :frowning:
