I received my Waltons Mellow D today and I have to say, I am really happily surprised by this little gem of a whistle. So far I have most of the trad style whistles: Generation (including two of the famous vintage versions, one in C and one in D), Clare, Feádog (standard and pro), Clarke (Sweetone, MEG, “classic”) and a standard Waltons. But this one even takes the cake compared to my vintage Generation D. It is very stable for a trad-style whistle, no squeaking and squealing or breaking of notes. Ornaments sound nice and snappy.
Compared to a standard Waltons the head is very different. The ramp and the windway are longer. The barrell is so much wider that you could fit the standard model inside and still have room left.
The sound is, like the name suggests, mellower than a normal Waltons. Considering the price of 9.50 €, this is incredible value for the money. I will try and record something in the next couple of days, if I find the time. For now just two pics:
Yes, I have to agree as I purchased a Mellow D a short time ago and was pleasantly surprised with the playability of the whistle. I have a few Mellow D’s from years ago and none compare to the recent one I received new direct from Waltons USA.
Ah, interesting. Are there any visible differences between the new one and the older ones you have? I would have gotten one much earlier, had I known how good it is. But my standard Waltons is nothing to write home about. So I hesitated for some time to get the “Mellow D”.
I picked up a Waltons C a while back, it came with a random collection I bought.
I don’t know when it was made. It looks like the D shown above.
It’s a great player! The tuning is very good, good octaves, the 2nd octave is sweet, the low octave full.
Nothing drastic. The plastic seems to differ slightly in color not design so perhaps production runs from varying time periods. No way to tell the new whistle production date or how long whistle sat in inventory. Its just a recent purchase is all.
