Bought Walton Mellow D!

I just gotta bunch of whistles in the mail. Two of which were the Walton Mellow D. I really like the evenness from between registers. I feel it doesn’t have as much volume as a smaller bored whistle though. The tone is lovely, round and moderately breathy (not close to a Clarke though). Tuning is very accurate within an acceptable range, and the OXX fingering for C is very close. I think it would be a great whistle for lyrical playing. Not sure if it would have enough bite to be heard with a large group of people without being miked. This whistle requires more breath support than the standard Walton and doesn’t play as easily as well. This isn’t bad, just different. I’ve read on the forum about this whistle and saw a video review of it on T Hinnigan’s site. He seemed to dig the whistle. Is there a way to get more volume with less breathiness out of the Mellow D by tweaking it? I’ve tweaked a few Feadogs and regular Waltons with some success.

Overall, I really enjoy this whistle. I’ve listened to a fair amount of clips online and to me, this whistle sounds as good as many pro whistles. Pretty good for something so inexpensive. Has anyone experienced similar playing characteristics with the Walton Mellow D?

I’ve experienced exactly the same from a mellow C- my favorite whistle for slow solo stuff- airs or hymns or whatever; too bad I lost it (no more biking with whistles in the pocket for me! >_<). Glad to hear you’re liking yours

Regarding tweaking the Mellow Dog. First, I would fill the space under the wind way with some stickie tac. Second, I would lightly polish the blade with 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper. These tweaks presume that you have removed the mouth piece from the tube. You might find this article useful: http://www.chiffandfipple.com/tweak.html . Good luck, Cyril.
