OT: Meaningful Gifts site missing whistle entry

Hi all,
I was prompted by Dale’s inspired introduction to the latest eZine to share with you guys RichGiving, a web project I have been working on with a few friends over the last year or so. Frustrated by the equation of the Holidays with commercialism, but at the same time loving the opportunity to share our thoughts for each other through gifts we decided to set up a site to help people share ideas for giving more meaningfully.
It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, and it’s not the most ‘whizzy’ of sites, but it has become quite popular. Do have a look, and let me know how you think it could be improved. Thanks!

PS: I was thinking the other day, though, that it would be great if someone submitted a paragraph on giving inexpensive whistles (Megs) as gifts. I could write it myself, but I am really trying to expand the base of contributions. Anna?

I tried giving of myself one year and made sweaters for all the family, nephews, nieces and such. I thought they turned out pretty good but the kids seemed to think a sweater just didn’t have the same whiz bang as an Xbox or whatever…

Those sweaters look really good to me! Yes, it is difficult with some recipients, especially as we are taught to equate cost ($) with value. So this way of giving may not be for every receiver. But I bet that a lot of the people who got those sweaters were really thrilled, not just by the sweater but by the fact that you put all that work in for them.
Kids are difficult. My own son (11) is really getting in to the homemade thing, and is working hard on small gifts for close family. He will still be getting the usual (non-violent) GameCube games from us, but we are also building stuff for him. I have bought a couple of those mini-RC Zip-Zap cars, but I’m making a set of barriers and bollards myself to use with them, which seems like a nice compromise.
We’re early on this road, but it has been a lot of fun so far.

My sister is giving her boy a zipzap for Christmas. I’m looking forward to playing with it too. I like the idea of building jumps and things for them. It’s a mechanized toy but you still get to use your imagination with them.
