New flute - image resized for the monitor impared

Hi Ya’ll,

I know that it’s been a while… hope everyone is doing well. I just had to share this photo of my new flute. It is fairly unique - made from snakewood. It’s a long story, but I was visiting with Hammy and the result is this flute. Snakewood is NOT a great wood to build a flute out of because of the cracks that so easily develop, so it’s likely that this will be the last of line. BUT its acoustic and visual properties are really very nice.

It has fabulous sound and it gets better as I get to know it. Here are a couple clips - with instructions to ignore my playing, of course:

So, I present to you snakewood in D by Hammy.

Take care,
Erik

WOW!! :boggle: :boggle: :boggle:

Gorgeous flute! Love the endcap. Make sure you play it regularly and keep it humidified to avoid the cracking.

Damn, I’m jealous.

That is a lovely flute!!! :astonished:

Wow.

I’m kinda fond of Hammys myself.

Anything made from Snakewood is a beauty to behold and all the more difficult to create. That’s certainly a gorgeous flute you have there.

Beauty indeed! Lucky man - take care of it and enjoy!

(BTW, to avoid photos drastically exceeding the width of the normal screen, either limit them to <700 pixels before posting or rotate them so the shorter axis is across page rather than the longer one. Easier to appreciate its beauty if one doesn’t have to pan across so much, plus easier to read any text, and it affects the whole web-page.)

Though I generally favor rather plain grain in wood used for flutes I have to say this one is a beauty.

May it, and you, never crack!

Good to see you on again, Erik.

Thanks… I’m glad that you all like it.

Alan, I know what you mean about grain, but this seems to be just the right size/flavor that it works for me.

Liney Bear,

The picture doesn’t do the end cap justice. It has a nice little silver inlay that is very attractive.

Oh, and Alan, I play Irish music. I’ve clearly already cracked

I very rarely see a flute any more than makes me think “Wow, I’d really like to have one of those!” but your new Hammy got me Erik. I generally really like Hammy’s flutes anyway (the way they play that is), but I’ve never run across any in anything other than Blackwood or Cocus, both of which still cause me allergy problems. Awesome flute. Let me know if you ever want to sell it. (Yeah, not likely, I realize.)

Any chance of another picture so we can get a look-see at that endcap?

Absolutely gorgeous. Like James, I have a weak spot for Hammy flutes. I had one that was incredible. Still miss that bad boy.

Sure, there’s always room for new pictures:

I’m glad you like it, Loren. Hammy is actually the one that started trying snakewood. I just encouraged him to try one for me  It will be unlikely that I ever part with it, but I’ll put you on the list.

Thanks for mentioning this, Jem. It really is a distraction, and something I’ve been seeing more of lately.

Then again, it seems that the computer industry has more recently been promoting “wide screen” monitors.

However, back here in the “normal” world, there really are screen limits, please.

yep, wide helps
on wide it’s only twice the size of the screen instead of 3 times

Thanks, ErikT, I appreciate your editing.

BTW, your snake wood flute is a beauty!

like this, eh

Wow!! Congratulations for that acquisition, it looks very beautiful, and I loved the way you played it.

Ooooooo… nice! Really beautiful instrument. (slobber, drool).

Muchas Gracias. I debated upon whether adding one of my sound clips would make the flute more OR less attractive  I recorded it on my handheld pocket pc, so that was two strikes against. Still, hopefully the instrument’s potential comes through in the recording. Maybe I’ll do another once my fingers know where the holes are. The right ring finger hole is a bit further down the body than I’m used to so I tend to miss the low D and Eb (as you can hear in the recording). But I’ll get it.

No slobber on the new instrument, please. That’s my job
