Hi James,
Thanks for the nice tunes. The flute looks and sounds great!
Is your Hamilton 6 Key a Nicholson copy? I noticed the flattened area over the R1, R2 holes, and the flute looks like it has a small bore.
Jon
Jon,
James looks like mine. I don’t think you could call the bore small, I’d actually think the other direction, although perhaps the taper is different from other flutes you’ve seen or built. My R1 & R2 aren’t flattened, but do ease into the side of the blocks there - maybe Hammy has made some changes for James? If you want to look at or measure mine, I’m in Venice.
The flattened area is like Nicholson flutes I’ve seen pictures of; it’s actually a very comfortable modification for me.
I’m pleased he made it that way, but I didn’t special order it or anything. “Blackwood 6-key” was my only specification.
The bore seems exactly the same size as the keyless body had to me.
I think this would be clearer in a photograph; while laying a flute on a scanner works, it’s not the clearest way to get a digital picture, and I think it tends to distort the image proportions a bit. But since my digital camera is still packed up somewhere…
I’ve ordered my keyless Olwell with the same flattened surface on the lower part of the joint. I’ve played Larry Mallette’s Olwell which has the same and really like it.
That’s really cool .. Congratulations and happy playing, James!
Mine must be like Kevin’s – no flattening. I’ve never seen that before … interesting.
I wouldn’t call it a small-bore, either – up by the barrel it’s quite big. Hammy just does a beautiful taper, I think. And I love the way it fits my hands.
Hmm, for me it was strictly feel. My fingers rested nicely on it and it felt very comfortable.
Edit: this is based upon playing Larry’s flute a few times. Mine should be ready this spring/summer and we’ll see how I like it after a few months of playing.
That looks really nice! The keywork doesn’t detract from the ‘masculine’ look of the Hammy at all. Very nice indeed. Can’t wait to get home from work so I can listen to the clips. Thanks for sharing James.
Hi Kevin,
I would like to stop by sometime and check out the Hammy, since you are right up the 10…
I like the feel of the flattened middle joint, I tryed it once when I was attempting to make a delrin Nickolson Improved, The flute proved to not be improved enough…
Jim,
What I read somewhere, was that Nickolson flattened that area to make it faster to get to the short F key. Also his flute was probably the first ergonomic attempt on a flute. He also did a cut away for the left hand on the first joint.
When the flute is flattened like that it reduces the chimney hight on those tone holes, which I would think would sharpen the notes more.
Jon
Jon,
Besides the Hammy, there are keyless flutes from Desi Seery, Michael Copeland, and Mark Hoza. My cell phone #/voice mail is on the ITMS website at http://www.worldtrad.org . Also any email sent to the worldtrad.org domain should reach me - I think my main address is in my C&F profile below. You might come out Tuesday nights for the session at Finn McCool’s in Santa Monica.
