New Contender

We have a new contender in the arena of Unknown Uilleann Pipes sold on Ebay. "Small Uilleann Pipes, excellent condition, Scottish made, good quality. Low price! Comes with carrying bag. " Being sold by someone who’s never sold or bought on Ebay.

What’s that Monty Python saying?

That looks a lot like this</a](http://www.bagpipe.co.uk/Uilleann_Practice_set.html">this</a)> (bagpipe.co.uk). From the site:

Practice set of uilleann pipes, plastic chanter and reed, syntheticl inner bag with green velvet bag cover, also comes complete with bellows and black carry case.
Plays two octaves in key of “D”.
Ideal for beginning or second instrument for whistle players , flute players…

They look very similar to the ones I tried at the World Piping Competition in Glasgow in August last year. You will remember at the time I said that the 2nd Octave needed more work on it.That was my only critiscism and that was because it had a plastic reed. The Chanter was synthetic well it all was and the bellows if I remember were converted from the bellows you use to inflate airbags. But if you are on a budget the reed could be sorted I suppose. At that price you can hardly complain can ye!!

that looks like the very same all-synthetic one that i was warned here to stay away from earlier.

Right. And the warnings should persist until someone perfects this design.

:astonished:

Actually I have one of those all-synthetic sets (you might want to call it “all-$#|+ sets”), and initially it sounded so terrible, and even seemed unplayable at all; however, after having played it for about a month, I began to notice the change. 2nd octave became easier to play, and even I could play a high C on it. stable back D, E (note: chanter tweaked). Bottom D plays okay. I believe this owes much to the fact that the plastic reed became softer and softer overtime. 2nd octave is “shrill” and it will worsen gradually.

Apparent Flaws:

  1. Design. It looks like $#|+, feels like $#|+. :imp: :moreevil: :imp: :moreevil:
I must say the design is utterly f-ugly, so I did some paint job on the bag, bellows and practically all over the set (except for some parts on the chanter), and it still is unattractive.

  2. Sound. I heard someone mention the sound as “a kazoo screaming”. Either you’ll get used to it or you will absolutely love to hate it.

Antaine, I do agree. I should have sought some counsell before purchasing that $#|+. Ston, so you’re getting Patrick’s set? Yon won’t be sorry! Very much worth waiting for.

I would only add…and the warnings should persist until someone perfects the warning methods. The perfect warning would be to reach everyone, esp eBay bidders. BTW, you can communicate with eBay bidders before the auction ends, and warn them, educate them, tell them to read C&F.

A couple of years ago we had some real pranksters on eBay, in the Gibson mandolin category. A bunch of us started warning unsuspecting bidders off, and we finally got the seller dismembered (no pun intended). just click on bidders user name and send a message through eBay. There will be a warning in the message that eBay does not tolerate spam, ect. Then he/she can email you back directly. Of course it’s impossible to warn snipers–last minute bidders.
