My newest favorite website

I don’t know if this is the Russian Onion or what, but take a gander at the stories at this site:

http://english.pravda.ru/science/mysteries/95191-0/

I don’t even know where to begin…

PS. Some of the links lead to nekkid pix and stuff so beware.

I will try this link when I am NOT on the reference desk in pubic view.

Anstapa

An old Soviet saying: “There is no truth in Pravda, and no news in Izvestiya.”

Pravda being Russian for “truth”, and izvestiya, “news”. They used to be the official propaganda rags of the Soviet regime. Plus ça change, and all that…

Not a reader, but what bits I’ve seen lead me to believe that Pravda has more than a passing acquaintance with yellow journalism.

Anstapa, so you don’t get in trouble, some of the headlines include:

Another human civilization may live inside Earth’s hollows

Russians may have specific genes that allow them to drink more vodka

Time proves: US made weapons are not reliable

Sixteen interesting facts you did not know about kissing

World’s strongest girl from Russian village easily lifts her big stallion-like dad

PS. It helps if you read them aloud with a Russian accent, especially the last one. And yes, they are translated.

Jayzus.

Sounds like their version of what I’d call a supermarket tabloid from your list of topics…

Legends say that an entry to the underground realms was located somewhere in the North, and legendary ancient tribes living on the planet centuries ago used the entries to have a good shelter under the Earth’s surface.

Wait till my D&D buds hear about this.

Hollow Earth theory. Made for some interesting books… Jules Verne, Edgar Rice Burroughs, …

The scientist in me says that hollow earth theory is complete bunk and not substantiated by any credible evidence. The D&D geek in me is searching for the real Menzoberranzan.

So, if you don’t hear from me again, I’ve prolly found it.

That’s why I thought this was like the Onion.

If the Earth is like the Onion, you might find the interior civilizations between the layers. (Yes, I’m making a joke.)

Oh, pravda.ru.. I’ve got really “great” memories associated with that.. few years ago I helped editing an online newspaper where users could send in shortened news from other online sources.. and there always were a lot of users trying to bring through those amazingly well investigated and serious articles

As, for example, today’s breaking news: “Scientists re-evaluate orchid that smells like stinky feet” - A must have!

When I was a child, I enjoyed reading Pellucidar by Edgar Rice Burroughs. To my young mind it seemed very plausible that there could be a world within a world. Later in college I majored in geology and geophysics, where I learned that the idea of a hollow Earth isn’t supported by scientific facts. The scientific idea that the center core of the Earth is very dense and molten (S-seismic waves cannot pass through it) is not as romantic a notion as a hollow earth with all kinds of living activity inside. If I was in charge of building a planet, I think that I would opt for the interesting idea of a hollow earth. And while I was at it, I would definitely do away with “black holes” in the Universe. They scare me.

Every now and again someone submits an article to Fark from the Pravda, usually attached to an “Unlikely” tag
I get a kick out of Pravda; it’s like The Weekly World News (may the Lords of Kobol rest it, it shall be missed!)

Today’s breaking news:

NASA employs drunkards and saboteurs
http://english.pravda.ru/topic/nasa_drunkards_saboteurs-425/

I wonder if this is some sort of bid for a cultural rapprochement.

But seriously, that’s not good news, and there’s apparently a grain truth to it.

Here’s](http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20070727.wnasadrunk0727/BNStory/International/home%22%3EHere%27s) what I read about it from a just-barely more reputable source.
