Michael Cronnolly Rudall and Rose Flute

Michael Cronnolly recently sent me his new Rudall and Rose model flute in polymer.

For those interested in a direct comparison between his original model flute and the R&R model, here are some comparison recordings:

In the first, I play the reel “Good Morning to your Nightcap.” In the second I play the jig “The Burnt Old Man.” In both, I play the original model flute first and then the R&R for comparison, using the same fingerings (my original model is a 6-key but I did not use any keys during these recordings.) In each I am using roughly the same embouchure and breath pressure. The reel is recorded with a very tight embouchure, the jig using a somewhat more open one. Note the volume level difference with the more open embouchure–this was also something I saw with the McGee RAF, and now I’m thinking this extra volume is a function of the Rudall and Rose bore profile.

Photos of the flute are online at

Best wishes,

I have the first of Michael’s R&R style instruments, have a recording on line at:

http://www.granitehillsdesign.com/michael/flute/m_e_rudall.mp3

I find the M&E R&R flute to compare quite well with many of the black wood flutes I’ve tried, albeit it does weigh about 15% more than my other flutes, even without keys. It does of course have the advantage of being dishwasher safe and doubles as a billy club during those particularly raucus sessions.

It’s an excellent flute, I’d recommend it to anyone who wants a low maintainence flute and doesn’t want to spend more than $500.00.

A quick reminder, I have a page with audio recordings comparing nearly all of my flutes and whistles at:

http://www.michaeleskin.com

Click on the Irish music link, then the Flute and Whistle comparisons link. There are also downloadable tunebooks, session recordings, etc. for your enjoyment.

Cheers,

Michael
