I’m very new to playing the flute. Teaching myself from a beginners flute book (for notes), and charts i find on the web.
I have cobbled together a fingering chart for me to learn from. I already know a lot of notes (not including all sharps and flats) from Bottom C through Middle C to High C, but am now trying to learn the rest, or atleast from High C upwards atm. Could the more proficient flautists (is that right?) just take a quick look at my chart to see if its correct?
Plus on (even) Higher A(sharp)/B(flat) and (even) Higher B theres two little squiggles that i dont understand what keys they relate to (or what they actually mean, if not keys) could anyone be kind enough to tell me? (and if they are keys, where abouts on my flute they are) Its a normal silver C flute (i think C) heh i said i was very new!
Now I need some help in figuring out what keys are which in your diagrams. Could you explain, please? I understand the six main dots, but what about the others?
Im not really sure which you mean, but the two little dots, beneath the six are the two keys on the side, which you use your thumb on. The Ab is the G# one. That long looking key on the back edge. And the (c) and (C#) i hadn’t a clue about.
BUT I have just found this picture, so have scanned it. It matches it all up (and also tells me about the squiggles)

Okay, now it all makes sense. Thanks for that picture. It cleared up the keys, as well as (I think)the squiggles. You see, on the right hand section, two “squiggles” like those on the chart. Those squiggles point to two tiny keys on the flute. I beleive they’re called trill keys, but I’ve never used them. They’re only for really high notes, like B3. I’m been told that the third octave is virtually impossible, but I don’t think that I’ve ever tried to go that high. think that you can figure out where they are by your diagram. I hope that I made sense here. Tell me if you’re confused and I’ll try to straighten it out.
Lifeforms, just wanted you to know that I’m not just leaving you hanging. I’m still working on your chart; I’ll get back to you when I’m done - hopefully soon.
Okay, Lifeforms, I believe your chart is correct. I had to experiment with some of the fingerings, but I didn’t come across any that looked like or sounded like they needed to be corrected. I couldn’t get C4, but that isn’t usually used a whole lot. Any questions?
BTW Lifeformz and I are related and though we play different flutes, and her a lot better than me, it’s fun to play all the different tunes people come up with. Somebody has now sent me the fingering for my highest octave on the Miller Browne 6 key flute. Trouble is that Lifeforms flute is C and mine is Bflat. This board is great.
Thats brilliant! Its nice to know that what im actually learning / playing is correct hehe I have learnt that i played a few wrong, but have corrected that pretty well. The lower F# for example. I would play that with the bottom middle finger. I think i picked that up from playing the recorder.
All i can do now is just carry on and try to learn the rest!
