Hawks have to eat, same as everyone else…
had to laugh too. 
According to the Guardian, a Royal Society for the Protection of Birds spokesman said the visitor had clearly lost its way. “Sparrowhawks do feed on small birds, and this one was probably not a great student of what’s rare and what’s not.”
(“Hey, I can’t remember seeing one of those before! Looks Tasty!”) 
That reminds me of something.
My daughter spent 4 weeks studying poison dart frogs in the Panamanian rainforest last summer. She has a photo (can’t find it right now) of a caterpillar emerging from its chrysalis right on the steps of their outpost. She and friend were concerned for its safety–might get stepped on! So they helpfully moved the whole operation to a nearby rock, whereupon the caterpillar was quickly scarfed up by a passing gecko.
Waiters in the rainforest! Who knew? I hope the gecko had the consideration to leave a good tip.
Reminds me of a story about a sea otter that had been defiled in the Exxon Valdez spill years ago. Animal rights activists spent something like 8 or $10,000 rehabilitating the animal, cleaning it up nursing it back to health. When it was in tip top shape, they had a little press conference to make their political points and release the otter back into the wild. They let the thing out of the box and it promptly bounded down the shore into the water. About 20 yards out it was promptly scarfed down by a killer whale in front of God, the news crews and everybody.

That’s really funny…no it isn’t- but it made me realize you guys pretty much suck.

Funny to us, not to the sparrow. (but I did have to laugh at the birdwatchers) It’s the way of the world- survival of the fittest and all that.
You wouldn’t think this was funny if, like me, you were a daily reader of the Western Morning News (our regional daily paper). This is bound to spawn a rash of readers’ letters condemning sparrowhawks and calling for their elimination. We get such an outburst in the letters columns about once every six months. I note from this morning’s news that a new airport near Durban, South Africa, will disrupt a crucial roosting site for three million migrating European swallows, a species already under threat from several causes. The airport is needed in time for the 2010 soccer World Cup.
