CP: Thornton Whistle (B flat ) tour.

Hello all,

A little while ago I finished a new design for a B flat whistle.
There are pictures and a sound clip on my website pipertommymartin.com but I’ll give you a quick description here.
The body is brass and includes a tuning slide that is about 2/3 of the way up the body. It’s a simple metal on metal slide with plenty of joint grease.

The mouthpiece is constructed from black ABS plastic and the particular one pictured on the site has a ring of white polyester imitation ivory under the ABS. This is purely decorative and I have also used boxwood, rosewood and cocobola for this decorative ring so these materials can be requested too.
The only thing is that in time the cocobola will darken and will become almost as black as the ABS so the aesthetic effect will be lost but again its only aesthetic. I must say the boxwood looks good though
I’ll get some more pictures up online soon.

As for the sound. It’s loud, well loud for me
I compared it to a Chieftain V3 and an Overton, both in A mind you, but it’s equally as loud. Because my Bb has a different type of mouthpiece, the tone is quite different though. It’s not as breathy as some other Bb brands but it still packs a punch.

It’s difficult to put all the tonal comparisons into words so I have an extra one in the workshop and it’s going out on a tour to whoever would like to play it for a few days.

Here’s the thing though…

I will be out of town for the next 7 or 8 days so in the mean time whoever is interested can place the name on a list via email to me. info@pipertommymartin.com

When i have the first 4 or 5 names I’ll start sending out a group email to give people an idea of who is on the list and what order they’re in so people can be in communication with each other for address’ , expected arrival time, etc.

I’ll start the tour in the US and Canada but I’ll have a go at a Euro tour a little later in the year.
So basically hold on the the whistle for a few days, give it a bit of a wipe and mail it on. Postage is on you.

If anyone has any questions send me a pm or an email or just here.

Also I’ve redesigned the mouthpiece for my D (and E flat, still working on C) whistles lately to give them a bit more punch and reduce clogging but that’ll be for another day.

All the best,

Tommy
