Copeland Whistle Raffle & Benefit for Wendy Morrison

I’m not sure how many know about this. There is a Benefit Concert on Tuesday Oct 22nd in Silver Spring, MD for Wendy who had a fire in her home earlier this year. Check http://www.imtfolk.org/html/imt_morrison_benefit.html for more information.

There is a previous topic about Wendy’s Workshop on Oct 26th. Info at http://www.ladyofthecreek.com

We will be donating 2 Brass Copeland whistles. All proceeds to go to the benefit fund setup by the Institute of Musical Traditions.

We were not sure whether it’s better to use eBay as Colin Goldie did a few months back or have a Raffle and drawing. If you have a preference, please e-mail me off-line at jimr@CopelandWoowinds.com so we can get the most response.

Winners will have the choice of either a Brass D or E-flat whistle. Shipping will be paid by Copeland Woodwinds.

I will post more information here and at our web site on how to enter the raffle or when it’s up on eBay.

Thanks,
Jim Rementer

You use the term “raffle”, but it sounds like this is going to be an auction. Is this going to be an auction going to the highest bidder? Or a raffle where you can buy a chance and a winner will be chosen? Thanks.

I think they are asking us which method we would prefer.

I’d like to see it as a raffle. You could still do it on Ebay (I think), if you set it up as a dutch auction with a kazillion possible purchases. That way you could set a single price, and people could buy however many they wanted. As each purchase comes in, you assign it a number, then draw numbers later.

Don’t know if that is feasible, but I’d still prefer a raffle type setup. I’d think you would get more out of it as well. If you do a raffle, then you might get 50 people at $5 each, whereas the whistle might not auction for $250. Just a thought.

Aodhan

I wasn’t sure if an eBay auction was the best route. I thought a “raffle” would work better as each person would only chance $5 and we would have two drawings to win a Brass D or E-flat. Either way, two whistles would be up for the prize.

I appreciate any input, thanks, Jim

Do the raffle and mention it on this list. Don’t do ebay, as I for one, have had a recent disappointing “snipe” from someone named finnflute (who seems to like flutes)…

snipe: someone who doesn’t participate in the actual bidding at all until the very last second, then swoops in setting a high maximum bid at the last second.

A “sniper” is one of those antisocial types, a sneak, and probably very selfish, perhaps even onanistic, sitting at their computer alone… Actually, it’s kind of like waiting for a cab, and when one comes, you open the door and some jerk jumps in before you and pulls the door shut.

Just my opinion. Do the raffle. Make it exciting.

I’m not sure that ebay allows raffle formats…but they may have changed the rules. I’d rather see a normal raffle as well. If you get a post on the board, and in the newsletter, and on a couple other sites, you should get plenty of traffic, and not have to pay fees to ebay.

Yup, I agree, raffle would be way better than eBay!! For clarity (at least to me anyway), is it strictly one D and one Eflat whistle - or do each of the winners get to pick either of those 2 keys? What if both winners wanted a D, can they each pick that instead of one having to take an Eflat? Thanks

Cheryl

I also would vote for the raffle format. If you win, you get a great whistle for the price of a raffle ticket. If you lose, you donated money to a good cause.

John Mac

Happy to participate in a raffle.

Philo

A raffle it will be. Two winners will be chosen and each have their choice of either a Brass E-flat or a Brass D Copeland.

I’ll setup a credit card option on the Copeland site and also have a mail-in option as well.

Thanks, for your support and insight!
Jim

Let me know when all is ready and I’ll send out a message to 3200 subscribers.

Jim-- how about the option of the winner choosing a different key whistle (eg low D) and applying the normal price of a D to that, and paying the difference? I personally have more high whistles than I can shake a stick at, but I’d love the chance to get a Copeland low D at a discounted price.
I’ll take a chance or 2 in any event.. Wendy is a great lady who has been helpful to me in several non-celtic musical areas including Klezmer and Biblical chanting. Everyone, please help out.

Paul,
It would certainly be fine to apply the $259 value of a Brass D/E-flat to another whistle pitch. The only thing is that the whistle pitch (the winners choice) might be a little longer wait. The Brass D’s and E-flats are in-hand.

I should have the raffle operational by this evening.
Thanks,
Jim

I’ve done this on occasion myself as a defensive measure. On more than one occasion, I got beat out of an auction by a sniper. I finally got tired of it, and “joined em”.

Ebay could solve this if they wanted to. All they’d have to do is automatically extend the auction deadline by 15-30 minutes if a bid comes in less than 30 minutes from the deadline. This would make it more like a “real” auction. Truth is, they don’t want to fix it.

As a more topical note, however. I’ve found that “charity” auctions tend to bid up early, which makes them highly unattractive to snipers, who seem to mostly be bargain-hunters.

OK, we are ready to go.
If you click on the link below:
[Buy a Chance]

You can buy a chance on-line with a credit card. Please change the option for the shipping charge that comes up. The shipping drop-down last option will Zero out the shipping. If you forget, don’t worry, shipping will not be charged. You can also buy more than one chance by increasing the Quanity.

If you want to do this the conventional way, please mail a check or money order for $5 per chance with your name and address info to:

Copeland Woodwinds Co.
PO Box 406
Collingswood, NJ 08108-0406

Once again, all proceeds from this raffle will go to the Fund for Wendy Morrison.

We had not thought about an ending/drawing date for this but depending on the response, it will be around Oct 31st.

Thanks for your support!
Jim

Update on the drawing.

Mail entries must arrive by Oct 31st to be included. The drawing will take place at 8:00pm EST, Nov 1st.

So far 85 chances have been sold, Wow!
This is a wonderful response for a good cause from a great community.

Thankfully,
Jim

The credit card method is very painless and I don’t have to spend twice as much on getting a US money order

Good luck to all!

Disappointed, really ?
One would think that getting $486 from a whistle purchased $409 half a year ago is not so bad profit. Beats Wall Street for the same period of time, anyway.
Given this background, I understand a sniper’s attitude. The “sniper” nickname is quite well coined. In business jungle, if you’re decided to shoot, then shoot cleverly and don’t consider you’ll have a second chance. B.t.w., Finns are known for their excellent snipers, even today at the Olympic biathlons.
Now, strangely enough, no one apparently “sniped” at C.G. recent eBay donation. Maybe because he made it clear it was a new whistle he produced himself, and also that this was a charity. He didn’t even ask for a low bid equivalent of his catalog price. Nevertheless people have been glad to pay a nice big premium. For a charity. Like in “non-profit organization.”

P.S. No, I’m not “finnflute”.

(edited for price quote accuracy…)

Thanks for the great response. Still 2 in about 105 chances to win. Great odds!

Jim

I just wanted to pop this back up to the top of the list to remind people the draw is tomorrow, so get your tickets and support a good cause!!
