Chiff & Fipple: The Tenth Anniversary

March 25, 2006 is the 10th anniversary of Chiff & Fipple.

Now, granted, it is dated with roughly the same precision as Christmas. Sadly, I have no record of the launch, which was the uploading of a tiny little single-page website, “The Tinwhistle Table.” I believe it was 1996. So, merge that piece of vague knowledge with March 25, a date which I’m fond of, and we have ourselves an anniversary.

Congratulations to us all! Chiff & Fipple is a good thing.

Fondly,

Dale

Chiff & Fipple is nice.

Sometimes! :boggle:

:stuck_out_tongue:

So many people, who would never, in a million years, have met before have met on the Chiff.

So many kindred souls have got together, in a way that was not concievable before the Chiff.

So many lives have been changed.

So many have so much to be thankful for.

So many people are not as lonely as they were before the Chiff.

So many people, so many people.

Here’s to the next ten

Well personally, I am healthier (yeah, I know), wealthier (yeah, I know that too) and, hopefully, wiser than I was before Chiff and Fipple–even though I don’t really play whistle (my original reason for joining) anymore at all–and it’s all because of individual persons at C&F.

Well, I, for one, am immensely grateful for C+F. For me to say more than that would diminish it, I think.

But you didn’t even say why you are grateful. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s just… too much! puts hand, palm out, on forehead

Well, C&F is a lot of different things for a lot of different people, so enquiring minds tend to be er…enquiring. Saying “for everything” is kind of too blankety, since there are bound to be aspects you don’t care too much for.

Considering that I am going from not being able to play this:

to fairly soon getting one of these
(not the fancy stuff in the middle)
and probably not being able to play it:

I’d say C&F has had quite a big impact on my life.

The things I didn’t know about.
The even more things I don’t know about now. :boggle: :boggle:
But hey, I just read about another way to try to hit that low D after you play C#. Someone out there always has something to say.

What a really amazing place it is. You can learn about music, be silly, be serious, be quiet, say something. I like this place very much and thank you.

Oddly enough, the traditional gift for a ten year anniversary is tin.

Thank you, Dale, and congratulations. C&F means a lot to me–as dubhlinn has said, there are so many friends I would never have had the chance to know if it were not for this site. I love it.

Carol

Yet another “little” reason I like C&F is because of the “Lord, help us see how near is your Kingdom” as the last words to every newsletter and also on the bottom of most C&F webpages.

In addition, the links to the Hunger Site (http://www.thehungersite.com) and the National Coalition to Abolish The Death Penalty (http://www.ncadp.org/) at the bottom of the Whistle Guides and at the bottom (or top) of other C&F pages don’t go unnoticed or unappreciated. These kinds of “little” things Dale has always done (as far as I remember) are very consistent, straight-forward, distinctive, and honorable parts of C&F.

And Walden!!

And lastly (of course) Binky the possum and the Crastyl Peepol sihgskH8//]|\/

I think the more important question is why DALE has put up with all of US for 10 years!!!

But I am thankful he has.

When you start something new, you never really can know what the new idea or project will mean for you. Dale, I’m sure that you had no idea that the beginning Chiff page would morph into what it is today, a worldwide forum for people who have an interest in traditional music.

Now, when I get up in the morning, even before my first cup of coffee, I begin to wonder what happened at C & F while I was sleeping. OK I may be a little OCD, but it runs in my family. The desire for friendly relationships and discourse isn’t such a bad obsession. Somewhat like the C & F world map with a jumble of location marks, C & F is a complex community that is an important part of my life. Thank you, Dale, for your innovative ideas and for your perserverance and patience.

Here, here.

There, there.

Doug, you have, once again, expressed my exact sentiments, right down to the OCD.

Topical quote from the Gruaniad, “Review” section, Saturday 25/03/2006
from an article by John Banville entitled “Beckett on the Couch”:

(Becket quoted) “I used to play the tin whistle by the way at the Ecole Normale, a rusty old tin whistle. I had a tin whistle and I used to tweetle on it, and in Dublin too.”
Now there is a thing not many people knew.

Chiff and Fipple has taught me many things I never knew. And allowed me to share one or two things I did know.

This has been the perfect place for me through some very odd times in my life. It’s made the world a still smaller place and taught me things I was unaware I didn’t know.

In the past I’ve disagreed on political/religious matters with someone who posted his opinions. However, over the past couple of months, I’ve noticed this same person posting about random topics, usually in the pub forum, and realized we actually have many interests in common and our posting exchanges (and even an email or two) have completely changed the way I think of this person. He’s become a very real, interesting, friendly person to me. I now have an friendly acquaintance who lives in a country far from me. I’ll treat his political/religious posts with more respect and be more careful about my replies. To me, that’s the secret to peace in the world!

All of this thanks to Dale and his always humorous, kindhearted leadership and moderation.

Susan

Tut, tut. Congratulations didn’t say “for everything”, did he.

I’m grateful for C&F, too. I don’t think it’s necessary to say why.

Ten years of something very special! And many happy returns for it.
