Busman Pink Ivory : a whistle to keep forever !

Hi ,

I got my Busman high D about three weeks ago . It’s made of Pink Ivory with brass fittings , what a beautifull whistle !

The pink ivory is really a special wood , the color is amazing , it has some very interesting iridescenses ( chatoyancy=cat eyes ) when you watch and move the whistle under the sunlight , it reminds me the effect of thouse stones like Tigereyes , Cateyes , Moonstone ,etc..
Actually the color of my whistle seems to be darker then the average pink ivory color wich is much more PINK or watermelon RED ! To be honest I prefer it darker like mine , the other light color looks too much like a candy to me !

The whistle is very well made , all the details are well done ; finger holes edges , windway’s window , fittings , inside bore , etc. etc.

As I’m still in the breaking in period , I still have to discover the best way to take out the best of this whistle , but so far after , let’s say three weeks of little playing, already I can appreciate his nice sound , sweet and crispy !
And I belive the sound will grow even better and better after few months !

The first octave is very easy and clear , and the second one needs a bit of push , but after a bit of practice become very clear as well .

About the volume , it’s just fine , actually I’ve asked Paul to make the whistle with a softer sound , perfect to be played at home , and if pushed a bit harder , I guess , also in little sessions .

It is important to warm up the whistle before playing it otherwise you get in clogging troubles , that’s what I’ve experienced . But if it is warmed up properly don not clog at all !

After all I can say that this whistle will be one of thouse that I’ll keep forever !
WHAT A LOVELY SOUND !!!

Here below just a couple of photos to give you a better idea of the beauty :

Is this what you meant to show? Pretty!

Exactly !

Thank’s

In those photos, the wood tone looks a lot like Purpleheart, another of my favorite woods!!

Verrrry prettttty.

Precioussss, even. :sunglasses:

Of course you’re not helping with any WhOA problems here … what would be the 12 step?

Of course how could I be sincere with lust in my heart … :sniffle:

I received an Eb in Paul from the same batch of Pink Ivory and I could not be happier. It has become one of my favorites whistles. The sound and playability is just outstanding. Beautiful wood and sweet sound and spot on tuning.

I also asked Paul to make it a bit quieter for playing at home and what I got was just perfect. Lovely bell note, very easy octave change and the loveliest second octave A and B that I have ever played. Not a huge volume change or push necessary for the high notes on the second octave.

I have a Busman C that is a bit on the quiet side (which I like), an Eb the same way and I have just asked Paul to make me a high D in the same way so I have all three for playing at home. Paul is really doing some outstanding work.

Bought them all from Blayne at Whistle and Drum to save the taxes (I live in NYS as does Paul) and so Blayne could also evalute them for me (I am relatively new at this). What could be better?

SOrry - meant to say “I received an Eb from Paul…”

Hi Patrickh

so we’re sharing the pink ivory brothers !

In fact the Busman whistles are top quality whistle ,anyway I don’t know much about others wooden whistles !

I’m agree with you the volume in between first and second ocatave is very balanced !

I can see your Busman collection getting bigger !
Wich wood the C whistle is made of ?

Hi ChuffedAlex

yes … I feel guilty to show you thouse pictures , now the Busman temptation will follow you also in your dreams !
I guess there’s not escape , probably the fate already decided for you : you’ll buy a Busman soon or later !!!

I have a D one in Olivewood. Not loud enough for large sessions, but a great Whistle for recording or miced settings.

Hi

Olivewood must be also a very nice wood for whistle , I’m wondering if yours is african or european olivewood ?
From what I know the european one is amazing , such nice dark and light figures inside the wood !

My Busman C is in Satinwood and is very lovely. It was my first Busman and I feel in love with it because of it’s sweet tone and quiet character. I asked Paul to do the same with the Eb in Pink Ivory and that turned out so well I asked for the same in the D in Tulipwood that he is now building for me.

I also have a Thin Weasel in C which is much louder (which can be good for other situations) so the Busman’s quiet character is perfect as an offset to the Weasel.

I love wooden whistles and also have a Lon Dubh in D and a Greenwood in D. The Lon Dubh plays and sounds very differently (less woody, somewhat quiet, easy to play, a joy really). The Greenwood D is very loud and clear and very easily playable (possibly the easiest whistle to play that I own). All are different which is great.

I have a Busman D with pink ivory tube and blackwood head—the Jerry Lee special. I don’t think it has a twin. It’s now about 4 years old. A lovely looking and playing whistle.

Paul, are you making “Eb” whistles now? Did you get that larger lathe and longer drill that you’ve been meaning to get?

Actually, I posted a picture of my two Flutes and Busman a while ago on the Flute forum, here is that pic:

Obviously the Busman is on the bottom on top is a Burns Boxwood Pratten and a Copley Eb Blackwood.

Patrickh

please stop with the list of your great whistles otherwise I get WhOA affected again !!! :boggle:

Wombat

Pink Ivory and Blackwood sounds a good combination , do you have any pics ?

Avery

that olivewood busman looks very beautifull !
I can see you’ve asked for brass fittings , personally I think brass match better then silver colour on almost of the hardwoods !
I like only blackwood and maybe some other very dark wood ,with sterling silver fittings !

Manuel

Yes I do, but I can’t post them. I did post them some years ago and I suppose they are still here—since I can’t host them I must have got a friend to host them for me.

I suppose they are still here to be found if you know how to search the boards efficiently.

Here we go I think. An old post. The resolution is poor. The pink ivory is lighter than it appears.

Wow Wombat !

The Busman looks very elegant with that mix of BW and PI and sterling silver fittings , congratulations !

I must say that also the Abells , Grinters etc., looks very good !

You really are a lucky guy with all thouse nice whistles !!! :open_mouth:

Manuel

Yes, I do have a lot of nice wooden whistles although, with flutes as well, it’s a lot of oiling. I really like wood, but the ones hanging around waiting to be played are metal, of course—no need to swab them out.

You should love your Busman. My favourite D whistle swaps between Busman, Humphrey and Sindt. The Busman is clearly my favourite non-Generation style D, so I prefer it to Abell, Thin Weasel, Burke, Copeland and even Overton. It’s also the best looking whistle I own.

I really like the Blackwood head on the Pink ivory body. I’m surprized Paul isn’t doing more of that sort of thing.
