A Word About the New Burke

I’ve been playing the new Burke Brass Session Black Tip D for several days now, and it’s an absolute joy. I think if any beginner wanted to jump up to a high end yet not bank breaking whistle, I’d recommend this one first. I still have the AL-pro D which has always been one of my favorites; this is, with respect to my tastes, improved.

IT looks real good with my favorite combo of brass and delrin and has a good working slide. Tone holes are comfortably placed and sized, and while still light enough, has a bit more weight to it than the ethereal Al-pro.
It is forgiving and easy to play and perhaps moreso than any other whistle never stands in the way of getting the music down.

IMHO, the improvement is in a stronger low end wo sacrificing the upper. Very beautiful full round sound with Burke purity and even a hint of an overtone at the bottom. When all is said and done, it is a pleasure to play this whistle nonstop for hours at a clip. Really terrific.

Philo. been playing my black tipped delrin Burke wide bore which just came out in September. It is far improved over other Michael Burke high D’s I have heard or played. It has become my favourite session whistle, even over my WW. It’s because of the big sounding low register and the great clarity up high. Only one problem! Can’t put it down. It is just awesome. Have to use a little Brasso to keep it shiny like the day it came, but the goldish finish bounces right back. Michael really did himself proud with this one! And it is sooo solid feeling and balanced perfectly.

Don

You guys are killin me. I already have a D Brass and Al Pro Session. Cannot justify another purchase… [feverishly dreams up get rich quick scheme]

[hmm… maybe I’ll sell everyone of my cheapos to Jerry for tweakin glory…wonder if I can get $130…???]

I guess the delrin tip tho, is what I have with my high Es, both brass and al, which have that feature, as well as the low ones…So this is another design alteration beyond having the delrin wrap around the top??

Don - At last a convergence of tastes! It is a great whistle, isn’t it? Just doesn’t have a weakness and has some character too.

Weekenders - What more justification do you need? :smiling_imp:

PhilO

I concur that this is an astoundingly good tooter.

Give it up Weekender…it’s inevitable.

Doc

I just received a new black tip WB brass in C, and I couldn’t be more pleased. Ditto to everything PhilO said about his D.

Alright Jay, you know I’m weak; don’t start with the C…

AFAIK, this is the same thing that he always did on his low whistles, and he started doing it to his high whistles because some people don’t like the taste of metal. I doubt this changes the sound in any way, so i think the improvements people are hearing are probably from Mike’s continuous research and improvement on all parts of the whistle.

mike added another low D recently https://www.sslzone.com/burkewhistles/write/michaelburke/Product_Info.asp?ID=92

Great, now we have at least two makers selling ‘Viper’ whistles!

My new style narrow bore brass D is, dare I say, the perfect whistle! Not quite as loud as the wide bore but sweet, whistly, easy to play, forgiving…

(Better stop now or my wife might get jealous!)
