waste not 1

Post by talasiga »

I haven't bothered with a poll for a while. I do like setting them up.
It makes me feel a sense of belonging and vantage in these forums.
Your contributions are incidental to this, though enjoyable and comforting.

Seriously though, this will be the first of a series of polls which may get quite quite complicated.
This one is simple and, if you insist, simplistic, in its schema.

Its about your car and your PC monitor and your TV (if you have more than one account for the one you use the most)

How long have you had these three? Put all their years together and divide by 3. Then register your result in the poll.

For example, in my case (and I will not take part in the poll)
car = 22
monitor=7
TV= 20
result = 49/3 = 16.666 :o

with caveats
41 car (1st 3 yrs was a motorcycle)
25 monitor
14 TV (never received TV. VHS/DVD/wii)
80 / 3 = 26.667
Picture a bright blue ball just spinning, spinning free
It's dizzying, the possibilities. Ashes, Ashes all fall down.

I've had my car 5 years, a third of its life
my monitor is new - less than a year
I don't own a TV - so:
(5 + 1 + 0) /3 = 2

just some common sense advice:

if you only have two items then you should only divide by two!
Zero is not a number.

yes, the poll is simplistic. Total household cars, monitors, and TV's divided by the number of household members might have been a better indicator. Cell phones could have been added to the items too.

My last car was fifteen years old. One owner, me. I was sad when it died.

This is true. I will register a result (although I'm not sure whether a laptop subs for a monitor, so I'll leave that one off.) But a friend once was surprised by the number of computers I had owned over the course of 20 years compared to her, until I made the obvious point that she was covering the needs of one person, whereas I was covering six. When we divided by users the numbers came out the same.

However, the timing will skew me as a high-volume purchaser since I bought my first HD wide-screen tv last year*, and--due to the latest car hand-me-down--I have a one year old Subaru.

Given the nature of products being considered in this poll, the last two year-span options seem a little out of place.

*given a change in U.S. broadcasting protocols the last 2 years would probably skew toward higher than average television purchasing numbers across the country. Major networks dropped airwaves broadcasting and we had 2 options--upgrade our old sets, or obtain some sort of adapter device. So more people than typical will have bought a new set recently.

Oh, come on! You don't have a computer monitor more than 40 years old? Of course you do have to get one from an alternative time line, and sometimes the voltages aren't compatible...

Well yes, I have one of those, but it's from the Thunderdome and is fueled by pig emissions. Having no pig here, it's pretty much a paperweight.

My truck is 13 years old with 240,000+ MILES. I've been known to easliy put 30,000+ miles on a vehicle in a year. Chronological vehicle age doesn't hold much water with me.

yes, I admit it and I also don't mind negative criticism that is thoughtful.

here is my thoughtful defense:-

the poll is driven by the theme of USAGE and potential waste.
It is impossibel for a person to DRIVE TWO OR MORE CARS at the same time
and thats why I said choose the car you uuse the most if you have more than one.

We are distilling your usage with the benefit of the oldest item.
(And, no, I could not understand the last sentence if I already didn't know what I was talking about, your Honour)

As I said I am not taking part in the poll.
The vehicle I drive reads over half a million kilometres.
I got it second hand 22 years ago when it read about 80,000 kilometres.
Australia is smaller than the USA by roughly 20% more than the ratio that a kilometre is smaller than a mile.

My truck is 15 years old and has 85,000 miles on it. I think my laptop is 5 years old. I don't own a TV but there is one in the living room. I have no idea how old it is. I didn't count it in the poll.

By the way, I have never bought a car in my whole life. My dad gave me the truck. Before that he gave me two other cars. If the truck dies, I may buy a van so I can live in it. Or I will just ride my Vespa until it dies and then buy the van.

Don't forget to wear a scarf while you ride the Vespa. (I love this website.)

I had to estimate but I think it's around 5 years
each. I erred on the side of caution ... average
of 2-5 years. It would be higher if someone had
refrained from turning left in front of my '95 Camry
and my last TV and CRT monitor not succommed
to entropy. I don't want to be wasteful, but
sometimes I am hamstrung by fate.
