Good on ya Beth for taking the first steps in learning a different - and rewarding craft. I'll echo that the others who posted so negatively have no idea what it really is that you have done, nor do they understand your intent.

But let them rant and rave and belittle. The rest of us love you, and we know exactly what it is that you've done - yes that includes Mack too.

We think you're awesome period - some of us are blessed to know that first-hand. Keep it up!

B~

Edited to comment on what has been said directly below: I don't know what "help" I'm giving Beth. She seems to have gained favor in enough peoples eyes (and hearts)here on her own. I just find it interesting that there's only really two of you who feel 'injured' at her 'lie' which you also seem to feel was somehow directed at you. No need to get defensive when there isn't any threat to be defensive about, you see?

Wow. Move along folks - nothing more to see here.

I agree completely.

Huh? We know you love Beth, but this statement is hogwash.

Yeah, Brian, I have too many whistles, I have posted too many pictures, etc. Beth and I are not dissimilar in our participation on this board (although she posts far more often and I get angry more often). She is really cool and she doesn't need false praise. There is so much about her that is worthy of valid praise. She is an excellent whistler, an active traveller, a good friend to a lot of people, and a very creative person, on the lathe and otherwise. But she drilled holes in a tube, and all the people who had negative comments can understand it quite easily. Drilling holes in a tube to improve a whistle is ABSOLUTELY interesting and cool, but it's not making a whistle. Her choice of words, not her whistle modification, led to the negative comments.

When you defend something that doesn't need to be defended and you say things that are not true AND not necessary, you are not helping her.

Tube, whistle, shepherd's pipe... Anyway, it looks pretty good.

As great an accomplishment as the "Bloody Hands" whistle, I think.

As a new builder (and whistler) I can attest to the fact that it is not simply drilling holes in a tube. I don't care to count the useless out of tune pipes lying around here...

Great job on your whistle, it sounded really good and in tune. I'm sure that you'll be creating your own mouthpieces as well in the near future and if they are of the same quality, I will be very interested in hearing them!

Since my name has been taken in vain WRT getting started in whistlesmithing, and since I am rapidly becoming the Ultimate Expert in the effective use of Pete Kosel's "flutomat" for tuning tubes, please allow me to offer the following bit of Serpent Wisdom:

By definition, a (tunable) whistle is comprised of a head, which does the splitting of an airstream, and a tube, or body, which does the work of tuning and containing most of a resultant vibrating column of air.

What Beth made was, indeed, a whistle. It does not matter that she didn't fabricate the head. A lot of whistlesmiths (Howard, Gen, etc...) use injection-molded heads, some of which are likely jobbed out. Nobody here denies that the resulting products are whistles.

I'm a silversmith. Does the fact that I had someone else cast a pendant from my design, and assembled a necklace from purchased chain and a commercial catch, make the resulting product any less a necklace that I fabricated?
(edit) sorry, been havin' my ideas bucked up offline - make that read "...any less a necklace that I fabricated and <font +=2>designed?</font>" (emphasis mine) (/edit)

Agreed, Bill. See, here I tweaked an old head into something different. A Picasso Bull's head, to pay my dues.

Now I have the original Zoob Moose head. And, thanks to my Flutomat tuning, the Brooks seat, er, plays ? perdatonic scale but in tune to itself.

Actually I do think it was unfair to state that JessieK and wizzy made their comments due to jealousness or any nastiness. What in the world do they have to be jealous about? One is a whistle maker, and I understand the other has made quite a few flutes in her time. They just felt that Beth's caption was not accurate or precise enough. As someone who has made a few whistles (the whole thing) and a few unfinished ruined ones, I do agree that the mouthpc part of the whistle is the most difficult part to do right.

On the other hand, most people would just have taken Beth's post to be her reporting the results of her first foray into whistle-making. If I'm not mistaken, the C&F site's links to plans for making "whistles", has at least one which teaches you to make only the barrel, for use on a Sweetone mouthpc.

Seen on that level, I don't think Beth's post or caption was particularly misleading.

Well it would seem that I have put my foot in my mouth again!
First I would like to apologise To Beth as others have all ready said in this thread my comments were not made out of any bad feelings to Beth, but rather that I felt the title of the thread was misleading.
How ever I don't think I was total unreasonable or that I broke any of the rules of the board. I have in the past had a lot of worse things said to me on this board.
It was not intended to start any more {FLAME WARS} I just called it as I saw It.
But now this!
Hello,

If you (as 'wizzy") don't stop pissing in other people's cornflakes
on the whistle forums, I'll delete your account. You get no further
warnings.

The specific example is your behavior in this thread:

Either back off or go away.

Zoobster, you are, far and away, one of the funniest durn people on this board! If more people would follow your lead with real humour rather than sniping and sarcasm, we would be one happy community, indeed! I bow to your laugh-at-yourself-generating capabilities. In my book, you Da Man!!!

Too much, Bill, I'm gonna blush (or rosé ? I'm lost now)...

Now I'm quite in fun mood to-night.
I don't believe loosing another yet whistlemaker's presence on this board is good news.

One, for I think that urinating in someone's processed-food breakfast is doing him a service. But this may reflect just our very particular French idea of good taste...

Two, cause I believe Ava never needed anyone to defend her; she does pretty well by herself, and with her own wit. BTW, Ava, my sincere apologies for thinking you were the one overreacting. The events proved I addressed the wrong person

Three, because I just saw what seems "preventive strikes" on two members of the board--JessieK and Wizzy--in order to what? Prevent a possible would be flame war? Let's hope the "remedy" won't be worse than the ailment.

As a good froggie, I'd have wished for just sending some Blue helmets, or negociators, not strikes.

I hope this board will keep its diversity of personalities, opinion, and expressions, even if I've been known to loudly disagree with some of the most flamboyant here, for instance JessieK.

However, I never wanted them out, or silenced, or lynched.
I don't mind a good brawl, as long as no knife or bottleneck is held.

I don't think I'm alone that wouldn't like a totally cute, guaranteed PC board. When I see a community without mavericks, it's there I start to be afraid. For instance to have and lift a finger and patiently wait to be allowed out for a leak in delimited premises, even if I'm... pissed.

Philo ? Is this you who said my posts can be cryptic ?

And now what ? You want to order from me a Vee-Dee for your Ess-Oh ?

Whatever turns you on, but one usually ordered these items from Naples, not Brittany

Me either...

I myself am taking a leave from C&F. I don't know that my presence ever helped anyone much, and as a non-prolific poster, I probably won't be missed much.
I did get a lot out of my two+ year stay here (since the archives are down, it's hard to say how long I've been on the board). Anyway, I've never been one for long farewells or ranting on my way out the door.

It's been swell, for the most part.
