Tell us something.: irish music, specifically slow airs played on different whistle keys, also lower keyed flutes like Bb, but only from modern makers who have managed to get the hole spacing a little closer. And finally learning some fiddle tunes, mainly slow airs again so that the whole family don't go mad with the sound of a cat being strangled.

What, David. You don't swoon with rapture when you play?

It's the Máiréad Nesbitt / Michael Flatley school of whistling. I want to see her do splits and backflips. Bring it on!

Does show what you can do with a Generation F, though.

Say what you will about Mairead Nesbitt, watching her will always be preferable to watching some other prancing fiddlers.

Thankfully Ms. Rutter didn't go well into the upper register to sell the performance. Amusing clip.

Shouldn't there have been a baton in there somewhere?

The whistle was definately out of place it that setting. Glamorous the whistle ain't. A whistle should be seen mainly in smokey, dimly lit pubs, on street corners and other salt of the earth places. Well in my mind it does anyway. Certainly not on stage in some sleezy jazz performance. :D

ARRGH. Movement in playing in response to the music when it "just happens" looks good. Movement "pretended to" looks awful. If we could get her on stage with the fiddle player from Celtic Women we could avoid them both at once..... Even the playing is pretty pedestrian, perhaps because it is somewhat difficult to do the kind of things that piece really wants playing a whistle. Not impossible at all, but certainly not done in this performance.

To say I didn't like it would be an understatement. Still, different strokes for different folks.

The Walrus

What would a wild walrus whistle if a walrus could whistle wild?

The second mouse may get the cheese but the presentation leaves a lot to be desired.

I'd go with the pole. Image
