Here's a copy of the Spokes Mashiyane LP, King of Kwela, with cover scans included. This 1990 LP contains the same music as a later CD from from Sterns' called "King Kwela". The CD is also out of print, btw.

And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')

Thanks very much! I wonder if Ian was able to find out Spoke's fate?
(BTW - it's been an interesting adventure trying to learn to play something that even remotely resembles Dolos...)

Re: Spokes Mashiyane, King of Kwela
according to an article I have Spokes died of sclerosis 9 February 1972 (born 20 January 1933), so he was only 39.

Actually, I had found this some time ago, but I appreciate the pointer. The problem isn't the tune, but my lack of dedication and talent. It's still fun trying, though.

You can also find some Jack Lerole (whistle and sax) stuff on the Electric Jive blog. Search for "Big Voice Jack".

Re: Spokes Mashiyane, King of Kwela
Thank you very much! I had a quick listen on lunch break. Track 3 (ZCM - Aaron and Pieter) sounds very much like the tune used in Mango Groove's Special Star.
