I just played one recently and, having played both Seery and M&E Polymer flutes, I can tell you the one and only Delrin Olwell on the planet kicks the snot out of everything else out there.

Just thought you'd like to know.

Jessie, if you are reading this, please do the following:
Say out loud 5 times: "I will give my delrin Olwell to Chris Laughlin because he's a nice guy"
After you have done so, download this
file and run it (it has been virus checked with the newest update of Norton Antivirus).
Stare at the center of the circle for 30 to 45 seconds while repeating the mantra above. After the 30 or 45 seconds, immediately look away and stare at your hand on the mouse.
If things look a little bit strange then you have been hypnotized and you will send the flute to me.
Best,
Chris

Methinks Chris would like the Delrin Olwell due to his upcoming travel schedule....the Cocus would be much more high maintanence.

How does it compare to blackwood--
soundwise, I mean, of course?

For no appearent reason, I suddenly get this image of Loren sitting crouched in a dark corner, fondling and stroking the delrin Olwell.

"Preciousss... Yesss... My preciousssss...."

On another note: Jessie, Chris is correct, he needs that delrin tooter for his upcoming travels. In addition, Loren obviously needs your blackwood Olwell in order to have an instrument that doesn't cause him allergy. Finally, since Loren doesn't need two Olwells (?!), I will take the cocus one as my broker fee. So that's all settled, right?

Jens, where did you hide that camera?!?

Don't even bother trying to separate Jessie from here Olwells: I've tried, and believe me, it's simply not possible.

Jim,

This is a difficult question to answer, mostly because some people don't even believe you can't even hear the difference between different woods. I however don't cotton to this idea at all: I simply believe some people are have a more refined and/or sensitive sense of hearing.....but let's not stray to far here, eh?

I did compare the Delrin Olwell to my Cocus Olwell in a blind listening, and could pick out my flute fairly easily due to it having more clarity of tone, but I didn't have a blackwood Olwell at hand, and I think that's the real test because I believe Cocus and Blackwood do sound different, with the Cocus being slightly clearer and perhaps a little brighter sounding.

In the end, I would say the Polymer Olwell still sounds like polymer to the highly descriminating ear, but you'd likely only be able to tell in quiet room - certainly not as a listener at a session, etc., and I found the Olwell a good bit less "Synthetic" sounding than any polymer flute I've tried so far.

The more important thing, I think, is that the darn thing played like any other Olwell, simply fantastic. But then it wasn't a $500 flute so.....

Just out of curiousity, how many players here would pay $1000+ for a Polymer flute that good?

I would!

(and it IS possible to wrest an Olwell from Jessie, as I can attest. But I think I got in before she had completely bonded with it.)

My silver Boehm has suffered greatly since I started playing in bars. Three dents to date. At least if I had a delrin Olwell I wouldn't have to worry about it. It's so painful to see an instrument get hurt.

My blackwood and boxwood Olwells are better than the delrin one.

Cara, how many blackwood Olwells does one chick need? Hee hee. You got lucky.

I would pay $1000 for a polymer flute from Olwell if I had the money, no question about it.
