Obama Nobel Peace Prize Winner

Post by BigDavy »

I am an Obama well wisher, but the Nobel committee's decision has me scratching my head

The Republicans will likely go nuts over this.

Yeah, I agree with Paul, but as I said in the TEH...I'd like him to just be able to work, without the fanfare.
Asked why the prize had been awarded to Mr Obama less than a year after he took office, Nobel committee head Thorbjoern Jagland said: "It was because we would like to support what he is trying to achieve".
Good thought, but maybe later, when we see how things go.

Political BS. I have lost all respect for the Nobel prize. It waits 20-30 years for real ground breaking work, letting history give perspective, but it seems that it is not the wait for politicians.

Not a comment on my approval or disapproval of our current president, just about the prize.

It's especially startling given that nominations had to be in less than a month from when he took office.

Agreed. Premature. The upside is that it indicates the extent to which the world supports and applauds his efforts. It's also a well-deserved final kick in the teeth for..... never mind they closed down the forum this belongs in.

Considering the time of the nomination, it is blind support, and that is not a good thing. The thought that the prize has turned into a form of retribution is sad and contrary to it's intent.

Very true. That was my partisanship kicking in.

This is a joke. I like Obama, but he's leading a country that is at war with a few different countries. I told a guy at work, it's as if some guy is beating his wife, but he buys flowers to his secretary, and he suddenly becomes the most romantic guy on the planet. :(

So, elaborate on how fighting the Taliban is like beating your wife. :-?

'"So soon? Too early. He has no contribution so far. He is still at an early stage. He is only beginning to act," said former Polish President Lech Walesa, a 1983 Nobel Peace laureate.'

I know personally one Nobel Peace Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi, who received it after
leading a non-violent democracy movement in Burma, risking her life countless times,
winning the national election,
and living under house arrest for years
after the military
dictatorship refused to acknowledge her electoral victory. The
prize is one of the reasons she isn't dead.

Awarding the prize to someone
who has made 'no contribution so far,' where the award has a strong appearance of partisanship,
cheapens the prize and robs it of meaning. The prize has been a powerful
tool on behalf of peace. It will be less so now.

Rush who?
President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize in part because he has given the world new hope for peace, which is no small accomplishment.

I was hoping Pete Seeger would win it. He certainly deserves it.

I agree (with Doug). But the understandable criticism is that his accomplishments are less concrete, tangible and finalized than that of earlier recipients. Global rebirth of hope, optimism and humanitarianism, in and of themselves, are harder to quantify than, say, the outcome of a specific Mideast Peace Summit. Interesting situation.

And yes, Pete's contributions are pretty well jelled at this point. I can go along with that.
