I'm trying to locate the lyrics to "The Demon Lover" as sung by Pauline Scanlon on her "Hush" CD and have searched everything I can online but none of the lyrics are available that I can find....and none of the stores around here have the CD which, as I understand, has the lyrics on the liner. There's a YouTube video of a live performance but I can't understand most of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aKwIZOiEgw
If someone has the CD and willing to send me the lyrics, I'd be grateful.

It's an oldie. I'm not familiar with Pauline Scanlon's version (and Youtube is out of the question from where I am at the moment) but here's a version I have, most recently via Tim O'Brien.Ballyshannon wrote:I'm trying to locate the lyrics to "The Demon Lover" as sung by Pauline Scanlon on her "Hush" CD and have searched everything I can online but none of the lyrics are available that I can find....and none of the stores around here have the CD which, as I understand, has the lyrics on the liner. Well met, well met, my own true love
Well met, well met, cried he
I've just returned from the salt, salt sea
And it's all for the sake of thee
I've come for the vows that you promised me
To be my partner in life
She said my vows you must forgive
For now I'm a wedded wife
Yes I have married a house carpenter
To him I've born two fine sons
For it's seven long years since you sailed to the west
And I took you for dead and gone
If I was to leave my husband dear
And my two babies also
Just what have you to take me to
If with you I should now go
I have seven ships out upon the sea
And the eighth one that brought me to land
With four and twenty bold mariners
And music on every hand
It was then she went to her two little babes
She kissed them on cheek and on chin
Saying fare thee well my sweet little ones
I'll never see you again
They had not sailed much more than a week
I know that it was not three
When altered grew his countinence
And a raging came over the sea
When they reached the shore again
On the far side of the sea
It was there she spied his cloven hoof
And wept most bitterly
Oh what is that mountain yon she cried
So dreary with ice and with snow
It is the mountain of hell he cried
Where you and I now will go
Hope that's close!

Re: "The Demon Lover" lyrics as sung by Pauline Scanlon?
Thanks so much Feadoggie, but that's one of a few versions I found online...which is nowhere near the one Pauline does. Tim's and Pauline's versions are similar in a few spots but overall quite different. I should have added to my original post that I did find different versions online (including Tim O'Brien, A.L. Lloyd, and Steeleye Span). By "none of the lyrics being available that I can find", I meant for any of the songs on the Hush CD. Sorry about that.
The version Pauline does seems to be a mix of different versions, as well as possibly her own lyrics in places. The only way I'll be able to get her version is via the CD, which I can't get since I don't do any online ordering. So I need some assistance if someone has the CD.
Many thanks...

BTW, I noticed "Moved" in front of the post title on the main forum page. ???? Did I post this in the wrong forum? And where was it moved to?

Yeah, I was afraid of that. The version O'Brien sings with Karen Casey is based on the lyrics collected by Bert Loyd. I thought that was the most likely version. There were other versions out there in the sixties. You found the Steeleye Span version, I see.
Amazon has the mp3 for $.99. Shame I can't download anything from here
Good luck.

I found several mp3 and other download sites but none provide the lyrics. I'll just be patient and hope someone reads this post and has the CD....and willing to type the lyrics out for me.Feadoggie wrote:Does Pauline have an mp3 download site?
