Off To Sea Once More

Post by Whistling Archer »

This song is on Grateful Dawg " Shady Grove" album.
Does anybody know if they borrowed a old tune & put new lyrics, or is this the original sea shanty?
I picked it out the other day, kinda fun but mournful tune

Well, the song is older than the Grisman/Garcia
collaborations. The Dubliners recorded it in '68

I'm thinking it's the "original" shanty (in that it
is in the form it was in when it was collected).

A.L. Lloyd and Ewan MacColl would be the modern source (1956). Lloyd: "Our version is from Ted Howard of Barry." I guess that implies tune and lyric. It's the melody I've always heard for this, and I think it's in Stan Hugill's book (buried in a storage box here somewhere).

Where'd it go?

Anyway, several sources I have read say that it is a traditional song. Lots of different lyrics are around. It was recorded by A.L. Lloyd, Ewan MacColl and Harry Corbett in the mid/late sixties. That kind of became the standard reference version as far as I know. Lloyd and MacColl both have had musically talented offspring.

Grisman is da man!

Well, Old and In the Way did a lot to keep bluegrass alive in its day. It sure fostered the newgrass and psychograss genres. Dawg music! Gotta have it.

It was nice to see David out and about with John Sebastian again recently.

I have early versions on AL Lloyd's Leviathan (67), and by Louis Killen on Steady as She Goes.
And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')

MacColl's kids didn't/don't perform much in the folk world, although his daughter Kirsty recorded Fairytale of New York with the Pogues. His inlaws, however, are the Seegers - Pete and Mike Seeger. Ewan MacColl's widow is Peggy Seeger. Mike died a few days ago, btw.

From the liner notes of Leviathan

Estimable Stan Hugill said this song in “known to every seaman”. Well, to a good few, anyway. Who was Rapper Brown, the villain of the piece? Particularly during the latter days of sail, many lodging house keepers encouraged seamen to fall in debt to them, then signed them aboard a hardcase ship in return for the “advance note” loaned by the company to the sailor ostensibly to buy gear for the voyage. Paddy West of Great Howard Street, Liverpool, was well-known for this, likewise John da Costa of the same seaport. But we do not find Rapper Brown in this rogues' gallery. Perhaps there's some confusion here with the fearsome Shangai Brown of San Francisco, through whose ministrations many a British seaman awoke frm a drunken or drugged sleep do find himself aboard a vessel for the bowhead whaling grounds of the Bering Sea, a trip few men in their senses signed for, unless desperately hard pushed. Our version is from Ted Howard of Barry.

Yep! Kirsty met a sticky end as I recall, not a leviathan but water borne just the same.

In most versions I've heard of this, our
protagonist meets with Shangai Brown
as he walked down Battery Street.

Oh, weird. There are a couple discrepancies,
but that's pretty much it, yeah.

Yes, that's the basic melody. I don't think the OP was in doubt of that.
