Seriously weird sounds outta my new Burke...

Post by drbald1 »

So, I just recently bought a Burke Bb. I played it a bit, but hadn't had the time to seriously noodle on it for a few days.

Then I pulled it out in the living room and really gave it a go. All was well until I hit the upper register...that's when I heard it.

A weird, high-pitched vibrato, as if I were doing breath vibrato on another higher whistle playing alongside myself. I was crushed. Burke makes such good stuff, and here (I thought) I had the one weird anomaly.

I played for a while. Three notes in the higher register consistently created the weird warble.

Now, as C.S. Lewis would put it, I read all the right books. That is to say, the sound was weird enough I began to worry about opening strange rifts in the threads of reality.

That's when I went into the kitchen to noodle some more and the sound went away! The whistle played crystal clear.

There is no ceiling fan in the kitchen.

The transient nature of the sound makes me think of condensed breath droplets in the windway. Those can set up all sorts of weird wind vortices which can seriously produce some odd effects.

The fan in my office does the same thing on high speed but doesn't effect the whistle on low speed. Stand right under the fan and you'll get a very strong vibrato. I wonder if the fabric of the universe would tear if you took a deep breath of helium then played a high G whistle through the back of an oscillating fan.

Leslie?
The Walrus

What would a wild walrus whistle if a walrus could whistle wild?

The second mouse may get the cheese but the presentation leaves a lot to be desired.

This post first scared me{ Im wanna get a Burke} and then enlightened me. I play in front of a floor fan, to my back on my porch after work, It so hot here. & thought it had something with some different sounds , not ones I want, but then figured it was just me.
Good I can blame it on my fan

I'm familiar with the Leslie. I'm just not smart enough to recognize one!

I've experienced the ceiling fan syndrome and took a while to figure out what was happening. I once had a computer with a fairly loud fan and whenever my whistle would approach the same pitch as the fan, I'd get a similar effect, though more of an overtone than the Leslie effect.

On a creative note (so to speak) our band does our own version of El Condor Pasa where at the end, three of us are playing high D whistles....one on melody, one on high harmony, and the other on low harmony with no other instruments playing....only the whistles. The mixed overtones/undertones produced is amazingly ethereal as if ghosts are floating around the room adding these tones, especially on the B part "Away, I'd rather sail away...." when we're in a higher register. The first time we heard it, we all stopped at the same time, looked at each other and whispered...what was THAT??!! At the concert the other night we received a resounding ovation at the end of El Condor Pasa with the audience looking around the room for the ghosts we warned them about. Pretty cool effect and had the sound guy scratching his head.

Okay, now THAT is just funny. So, the lesson we should learn here is...don't practice near objects with frequencies harmonic to what we are playing?

Oops, I missed the bit about the fan.
Now I gotta run up to the bedroom and try playing under ours!

Tell us something.: Longtime member of Chiff and Fipple. I own/have owned more whistles than a person should, I think. But I’m not complaining.

Could your write out the notes for the different parts for this? It might be interesting to see if others can create the same effect.
