Just think what kind of BS Thoreau would go through now if he started cutting down trees to build himself a cabin on Walden Pond. Between the environmentalists, EPA, the zoning board, the landowners and the building trades unions, he'd probably have written about living in a tent on the shore of Lake Erie.
Of course, if the environmentalist, EPA, etc., were not looking out for Walden Pond, he wouldn't be able to pitch a tent there anyway, because there would be no trees left, the land would be a parking lot for yet another McDonalds, (add in your own "favorite" here), and the pond would be so polluted there wouldn't be anything left alive.

While I do think that society can get carried away about what we need to preserve, certainly Walden Pond is one place that should be.

All the Best, Tom

Ever notice that all the Smurfs are named for something they DO, except for one - Smurfette, who is named for what she IS?

Let's don't forget Papa Smurf... I relate to him... Before I retired, my co-workers dubbed me 'Papa Smurf', mostly because of my white hair and the stocking cap that I wear all winter. I think that's why anyway. Always afraid to ask. But then my granddaughter calls me 'Papa'. Hummmmm. Now why am I telling the forum this, and what does this have to do with anything anyway?

It seems to me that Grandpapa would be more grammatically sensible.

I trust that you have never attempted to explain to a 2.5-yr old what is grammatically sensible and what is not? For the record, it is *supposed* to be 'Papa Don', but Papa is as far as it goes.

Thank you, Soineanta

We always called my Great Grandfather that. At least they always spelled it that way, though we pronounced it Pap-paw. My mother called him that, yet called her grandmother (his wife) Grandmother. Interesting how she could pronounce that.
