After what You said about Your cats - maybe fate just wants to tell You, that You're not supposed to read newspapers..? :really:
However - how about buying some porns (for boys&girls, to be pc!), put 'em on the table and see what happens? Either the management will prefer them to the newspapers - so You'll have them for Yourself - or else they're going to read the newspapers - so You'll have something pretty satisfactory left, leading to a couple of also pretty weird threads of this week... :D

Da noive o'sum folks! Actually, the thick-headedness/rudeness is probably just a lack of even thinking about it at all, though I wouldn't put it past a few to knowingly sit back waiting until you move to the coffee machine so they can come in and take the paper over on purpose.

Cure:
Grasp paper, fold in half, perhaps even half again, tuck under arm, get coffee sugared and creamed, return to reading said paper. Let them ask for it when you're finished.

Real men obviously don't get coffee induced migraines.

I might start taking my cat to work and leave him on the paper while I make my coffee.

I'm sorry this person is so rude. Are you sure he's not English? I met a Canadian once, he seemed pleasant, even if a little goofy.
