Give a man a wooden reed and he'll play in the driest of weather,
Teach a man to make a wooden reed,

Re: Tommy Reck
This was already posted, but here's a YouTube clip of Tommy Reck and Peadar O'Loughlin. Would that be the Kenna set Tommy is playing?

Re: Tommy Reck
So when does the learning piper study the art of pipe smoking while playing, does that come before or after the regs?
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

But who, pray tell, might that young bearded lad be? This very early, (and obviously hand-tinted) daguerreotype, must surely have been taken in that by-gone era, long before american footballs became so pointy.

Re: Tommy Reck
He isnae actually smoking the briar but sooking on it.Those metal pipes were very good for that.It helped him not to pull those strange and often comical faces that ye see on loads o pipers.
I think a new CD would be very popular indeed.

Re: Tommy Reck
I'd like to add my thanks for your reedmaking book, Pat, and express my interest in any recording of Tommy Reck. I have the Stone in the Field, which I downloaded from a commercial site where it was available at $0.99 a track.

- Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

Have you pitched the idea to NPU?

Re: Tommy Reck
I have to remember to get that from NPU. I do have some video of him that one of you fellows made, very beautiful take of the Coolin in D. I recall Peter or Robert saying that his pipes had tough reeds in them, too.carel wrote:I am also interested in the recordings

Did you retrieve your S in the F tapes in full, Pat? Great album, he hits some wonky notes here and there but who cares? It's very up close sounding, which is nice. On other recordings he might be a little more confident and the regs are going, but the sound is altogether murky. I do have one lone track of him recorded in 1969, playing O'Carolan's Concerto; nice but we have the Gael-Linn recording already, on my rec the regs sound like guitar distortion.
NPU are really dragging their heels by not putting something together of him. "Master Piper" is what we have here. The Peadar O'Loughlin tape in of itself would do, can't imagine Peadar standing in the way of such a project.

Re: Tommy Reck
Pat, you'd be doing everyone a huge service to bring out those Reck recordings yourself, if NPU is not interested. I hope you decide to do it!
