What I heard on my walk

Post by izzarina »

It was a gorgeous day here. You couldn't ask for a better Spring day. The best thing was what I heard when I went for my evening walk:

I'd rather be atop the foothills than beneath them.

I was going to say something stupid, but the truth is, I really like that sound too.

The two thoughts are not mutually exclusive.

And many a poor man that has roved,
Loved and thought himself beloved,
From a glad kindness cannot take his eyes.

We've been hearin' those fellers for a while now down here.
The true sound of spring!
There's nothin' better than layin' abed, dozin' off to that sound comin' through the open windows on a warm spring night.
"Let low-country intruder approach a cove
And eyes as gray as icicle fangs measure stranger
For size, honesty, and intent."

Years ago we were on a backpacking trip when we set up camp next to this small man made pond that couldn't have been thirty feet across. As dusk began to fall we heard one or two Fowler's Toads singing nearby. As it became darker the number of toads joining the chorus increased exponentially every few minutes. Within an hour we could barely hear each other talk. We ended up breaking camp and hiking until the chorus faded into the background of other night time noises. We had hit the mating season right at it's peak adjacent to the only open body water for miles and miles. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezHxi2DEHOE

Those are lovely sounds from the rural country lanscape. Here, near Philadelphia we have an urban variety of peepers that sound like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyJCutyf ... re=related

Tell us something.: "Tell us something" hits me a bit like someone asking me to tell a joke. I can always think of a hundred of them until someone asks me for one. You know how it is. Right now, I can't think of "something" to tell you. But I have to use at least 100 characters to inform you of that.

Those are so cute. I have always intensely wanted one of those living in a terrerium in my living room. Sadly they don't live in Wyoming. Then, early one summer, just after the ice came off the lake, I discovered boreal chorus frogs. They live in the high mountains year round. The sound like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKRVVJCGYJ0, they are about the size of the tip joint of your index finger, they have suction cups on their toes just like a proper tree frog, and the have the COOLEST tiger stripe camo.
