Always something new to learn, to try out for yourself.

thanks for posting this!
Give a man a wooden reed and he'll play in the driest of weather,
Teach a man to make a wooden reed,
and the both of ye will go insane!

Excellent stuff... what a legend. There is a lot more going on here than he is telling us about. Remember he has 50 years or more of reedmaking experience. He makes it look easy like he makes playing the pipes look easy.

Great stuff... nice to see his den as well :)

Absolutely amazing! he didn`t take a single measurement, every thing is so natural; aside of this, I never saw that way to make the slip, nor even to soak the cane!!!
Thanks God for the opposite thumb.

Hey guess what!!! my high G was always a "little" flat, on the edge to make me feel uncomfortable, tryed the hammer tuning system and problem solved. Can`t believe it. I`ve made every kind of reeds and every staple tweeking and nothing... and with a hammer tap... just amazing.

Edited to add that the wisdom and knowledge this man has is reflected in his simplicity.
Thanks God for the opposite thumb.

I wonder if John Pederson was involved? Not a hells angel but you'd never know it to look at him :D

Tell us something.: I play Uilleann pipes, they have three regulators, three drones bass tenor and alto, also a chanter, bellows and bag.

Finbar certainly gets some lovely sounds out of that chanter, that set has a sound of its own, I have a few of Finbar's early albums were his pipe playing is truly amazing, having good cane is the secret of good reeds as finbar says, but he's certainly shown me a few tricks. all the best.

Robbie Hughes at a reedmaking class at the Belfast Tionol 2 years ago show me and others the Finbar Furey way of gouging shown on youtube.

I have not tried this way since that reedmaking Tionol because Robbie did the straight gouging at later Belfast Tionols.

I when back to straight gouging like Cillian Ó Briain or Andreas Rogge. I will give Finbars way a go the next time I am reedmaking.

Robbie Hughes years ago was reeding a D chanter I had once by Brendan O'Hare. He did the similar thing with the staple by using a pair of pliers to close the eye of the staple a wee bit without unbinding the reed as the High D was Sharp (Geoff Wooff also did this on the NPU DVD). Finbar used the hammer to close the eye of the staple a wee bit.

Cheers
