I was going through some of my very old photo albums today, and found what has to be the first photo taken of me with a whistle (1978). It's pretty grainy, but what the heck. I was a junior counselor at a Camp Fire day camp (the kid with me was a neighbor who also happened to be in my unit that week...we were just getting ready to meet the camp bus), and I used to bring my old Gen Eb with me to amuse the kids.

Ah...dontcha just love ancient history?

 Cool!
Light spills into the hidden valley,
Illuminating the falls, paths, and
The breathtaking Elvish dwelling
Set back among great trees.
Lilting strains of Elven songs fill my heart;
I am finally home.

That was my favorite hat back then. You can't tell from the photo, but there's a shamrock embroidered on the front (my one and only successful attempt at embroidery).

Eeek! And I just realized...those are Earth Shoes on my feet! Remember those...the forerunners of Birkenstocks? Ah, I was such a hippy (still am, come to think of it).

Hey, those earth shoes were comfortable!! I wish they'd make a comeback instead of all this junk I wouldn't pay 50 cents for at a thrift store!

Honestly, who would buy a half worn-out pair of jeans off the rack????

And sneakers nowaday!! They look like something you'd wear to disco dance.

DISCO IS NOT ANY GOOD! (to paraphrase)

They were comfortable, weren't they? Birkenstocks are similar in feel (and wear just as well), but I don't think their "shoe" (as opposed to sandal) styles look as good. Still, I live in 'em...my fave Arizona or Milano sandals in summer and black Birki clogs in winter (with heavy socks, if it gets really cold, but I rarely need them).

I always wanted to get a pair of Birk nurses shoes...and was determined to do so when I was expecting my last son and was having to work so much. Unfortunately we were absolutely impoverished during that time and I ended up wearing my mom's old white Reeboks that were a size too big for me! I flopped around all over the place in those huge ugly sneakers!

Now that I could afford to get them, it wouldn't be cost effective because I rarely work! I just bought a cheap pair of white shoes and that's what I wear now. Besides, I've had to toss a pair more than once in this profession. Look down at the shoes and think "No way am I even getting in my car with those on!" Literally tossed the cheap sneakers in the trash on my way out the door of the hospital and drove home in my socks.

Very cool photo! My brother David had a car similar to that, brings back memories.

Kim, you know you are in an honorable profession when you go home but your shoes don't. I have a deep respect for nurses--they are the true healers, and rarely do they get any credit for it, or even a thank you.

Well to Kim and any other nurses reading this, Thank You!!!

Best wishes to all,
