My friend and student Alec has an Overton low D.

It's wonderful in every way (if you have large hands, and can play a whistle that has good backpressure), and is one of the few low D whistles I've encountered that is loud enough to be clearly heard in the session.

Since I've taken up the flute, the one low D whistle I've kept is a Burke aluminum Pro. I didn't know Mike made brass low whistles; he didn't last time I was interested. I had one of his composites in E that was amazing. I have no idea why I parted with it.

The only other low whistles I have are Water Weasels. For reasons in addition to their playability, they're cold dead finger whistles.

Tell us something.: I'm just trying to update my profile. I need to change my location since I no longer is living in Sweden. I'm still playing the whistle though for the most time I'm just a lurker on the Chiff and Fipple board.

An Overton would be my choice, hands down. I've already got three (D, Bb and low D) and I've ordered a fourth (F)... :)

Cheers,
Anders

What's prompting the question?

I voted for a Burke brass. I already own a composite and two aluminum Burke low D's. So that's my thinking. :)

I've had an Overton and it's a great whistle but quite different from the Burke.

In all my travels I have never run into an MK. They do look interesting.

Tell us something.: Longtime member of Chiff and Fipple. I own/have owned more whistles than a person should, I think. But I’m not complaining.

It seems pretty hard to go wrong, given those choices. I put down Burke composite, mostly because it would fill in a "sound niche" for the low whistles in my collection. You have a Howard. Do you have other low whistles?

Have you considered Maurice Reviol's work?

WHAT! I had a Howard low D, and I let it get away. Sit up straight, take a deep breath, and lean on it. It was one of the loudest whistles I have played. Sounds like a beautiful fog horn.

I'd want a Sweetheart in ebony. Already have a nice matched octave pair of Overtons. Wouldn't trade them for anything. But I love Ralph and Walt's instruments too.

My 1st choice for a low D sound would be a Casey Burns flute. 8)

If you insist on a whistle choice, I'd try to find a Copeland.

Really depends on what sound you're looking for, Annie. Comparing a Burke to an Overton is almost like comparing apples and oranges -- two totally different sounds.
